We lived in Northern Indiana on the edge of the muck lands—those fertile, deep black soils that glaciers deposited as they retreated—in a county dotted with Amish mint farms. My three older sisters and I helped our parents grow and put up much of what we ate. Still, my mother's passion was her flower beds: lilacs, black-eyed Susans, peonies, Dutch iris, yarrow, four-o'clocks, summer phlox, petunias, and many "passalongs." I dreaded those hot afternoons of hoeing, weeding, and deadheading, not to mention putting down composted manure from neighboring farms. But when I was 23 and owned my first house, I suddenly understood my mother's obsession. Sixteen years later, restlessly approaching middle age, I went back to school at George Washington University in Residential Landscape Design to learn how to make gardens for other people. Since then, a million things have influenced my work but the strongest ideas still remain my mother's love of flower beds and the simplicity of Amish farms. Now twenty-eight years have passed and I'm again in a new phase. I've resigned my landscape design position with a design/build firm and started my own company, Carex: Garden Design by Carolyn Mullet. I want to do spare, lean, sustainable modern gardens (back to the aesthetic of Amish farms). Along with that I want to keep exploring the delight that plants bring to client's lives and my own. Can't ever give up plants.

Have you ever seen a parade made entirely of flowers? 🌷

Every April, the Netherlands celebrates spring in the most wonderful way. 🎊

Giant floats roll slowly through the bulb fields, and from a distance they look like painted sculptures.

Then they get closer.

And you realize every inch is covered in real hyacinths, tulips and daffodils, tucked in by hand, one by one.

It’s called the Bloemencorso Bollenstreek, and it’s been bringing joy to the bulb region since 1947. 💐

Imagine spending an afternoon with your hands full of flowers, helping the local flower artists bring a float to life.🌼

We’re heading there in April! Our Carexplorers get a behind-the-scenes peek to help build a float. Then on parade day, we know a great spot to cheer it on with the locals.

Hello, I’m Kim Rabbidge from Australia, one of the trip leaders here at Carex Tours. 🌸

I’m delighted to be leading our trip to the Chelsea Flower Show and English gardens next May.

At the end of next year there’ll be two very special trips to New Zealand 🥝 and Australia.🦘

Last month our Carexplorers visited Bosco Verticale in Milan. 🇮🇹

Chris Walsh, our garden expert leading the group, told them “Now, think like a gardener. Every plant up there has exposure, root volume, irrigation and maintenance needs. The horticulture is not decoration. The horticulture is infrastructure.”🌳

It was developed between 2007 and 2014 by Boeri Studio and is described as a prototype of architectural biodiversity.

It’s residential architecture conceived around the relationship between people, trees, birds and other living ecosystems.

Look at what the vegetation does to the silhouette of the architecture.

As Chris put it: “A conventional tower has hard edges. Here, the edges change with growth, pruning, season and weather.” 🌱

Here’s a look at what our Carex crew got up to on Day 4 in Lombardy 💚

They started at the Giardini di Villa Melzi in Bellagio, where every view is frameable 🖼️ with the lake, the mountains behind, and hidden pathways around every corner. Our group got to talk with the horticultural staff about how they care for the gardens.

Then came the pièce de résistance: a private tour of Villa Medici Giulini where classic Italianate style meets English hedgerows and hornbeams leading up to the villa. Afterwards the group were treated to their own private concert! 🎹

The day ended with a delicious aperitivo and a wonderful dinner, where everyone caught up and relived the day. Bravo, maestro! 👏

Ciao from day 2 in Italy! 🇮🇹 Our Carexplorers spent the day visiting two incredible villas, with Chris Walsh leading the way on our Great Italian Villa Gardens trip.

The first stop, Villa Della Porta Bozzolo. Built as a working country house, it was reimagined across the 1600s and 1700s into a villa di delizia, a villa of delight. 🌿

Then they headed to Villa Cicogna Mozzoni for a private visit with the current owner, Jacopo. The terraced gardens are a stunning example of Italian Renaissance design. 🌸
