it is a very true fact that growing food, harvesting food, cooking food and eating food is intertwined with us humans, and is a gift not to be taken for granted.
Radical hospitality at 40 Cronk Road in the Berkshires was just that. A gift- a family affair, a cooking extravaganza and an experiment. I’ve known Josie for years, and her home is one of the most wonderful places I have ever been, so when I found the wines, I called her:
¨Hey Joser, what do you think about throwing a party, I have this new thing I want to bring to life- conviviality as it’s best, most fluent: it’s Radical Hospitality and I’d love to bring it up there¨— she doubted for less than a minute and the next thing we knew were cooking for 40 with two 12 year old servers and Umi in the kitchen (our queens!). It worked. We did it, and it was deeeeeeeelicious.
The menu was simple, as it always will be. Local farmers. Natural wines. Entirely seasonal.
We made corn with saffron butter, fried peppers of all shapes and sizes, baked onions with thyme, pinchos with the most wonderful lamb from Mountain View, Kefta wagyu, romesco with cashews this time, curried yogurts, scallions, grilled zucchini with mint…Douglas put on his fire glove on stood on the stage- a summer smorgasbord that satisfied a varied crowd of people of all ages. We didn’t have time for pictures, ours hands were full, and greasy.
Often I find it hard to explain clearly what is it I want to do for fear of not sounding professional, or confident, or as good as the many talented people working in food and wine. I’ve sort of stumbled when asked where I´d like to take Jugo next.
This summer everything became more clear.
I want to cook.
I want to embody Radical Hospitality.
