🚰 A MAJOR CHANGE FOR BOTTLED WATER IN EUROPE
Today, 20 July 2026, marks an important deadline in the EU’s move away from Bisphenol A — better known as BPA.
Under EU Regulation 2024/3190, the standard transition period for most food and drink containers manufactured using BPA has now ended. This includes the rigid, reusable polycarbonate bottles commonly used with water coolers.
After this deadline, new BPA-based polycarbonate drinks bottles can no longer be introduced onto the European market for the first time.
Why has the EU taken this action?
BPA can migrate in very small amounts from food-contact materials into the food or drink they contain. Following its latest scientific assessment, the European Food Safety Authority concluded that dietary exposure to BPA represents a health concern, with potential effects on the immune system.
This does not mean that every plastic water bottle is affected. PET bottles are made from a different material, and existing qualifying reusable polycarbonate bottles already on the market have a limited transition period.
For households and businesses still buying, storing and lifting large water-cooler bottles, this is another good reason to consider a more convenient long-term solution.
