A simple diagram with a very profound message! When wetlands are filled and mangroves are removed for construction, we don’t eliminate water, we simply take away nature’s safest place to hold it. Mangrove forests and wetlands alike act as living sponges and speed bumps for storms, absorbing rainfall, slowing storm surge, and giving floodwaters room to spread out harmlessly.

Their roots lock soil in place, reduce erosion, and break the force of waves before they reach homes and roads. When these systems are replaced with concrete and compacted fill, rain has nowhere to go but sideways and into streets, neighborhoods, and buildings.

The result isn’t progress, it’s predictable flooding. Working with nature means keeping these protective systems intact while we build around them, not tearing them out and paying the price every rainy season.
