A typical day at the farm : we started selling our backyard chicken last Thursday and came this morning (Saturday 30th May) at about 9am, all our birds were sold out. We sold live and also butchered birds. After 11am, I had to clean the shed, disinfect it, and after 4 hours, I had to set up the shed again because new tenants were moving in. They're currently 3 weels old. I finished from. from the shed at 9pm.

We had stopped raising chicken since Covid-19 in 2021. After a lapse of 5 years, our lenses has definitely been adjusted. Lots of things have changed (for the better of course) and it's amazing.

Our experiences from 2017 - 2021 has helped us understand the changes in the environment especially the economic environment. The economy has stabilized and the buying power has improved.

On this new journey, it is God that had encouraged us to come back into the game. 🙏👍

We need to repair our chicken shed pronto. We were running a backyard chicken business from. 2017 to 2022 when Covid-19 hit Fiji in 2021. We closed the business because of the economic crisis that arose from Covid-19. Now we're back but we need to fix our chicken shed. Have to look for grant to help with our backyard business. Right now, we're improvising with what we have and trying to develop our backyard chicken business.

And here's our May broiler birds. We need the chicken manure for all our fruit trees. Will pot more plants as we have shoots e.g yasi, vutu, snake plants, aloe Vera, sikeci, white ginger etc. This is all happening in May.

This time in May last year, it was wet but the vanilla plants withstood the rain and changes in weather and still, it bloomed and flowered. We have a few beans and we will trial the processing of beans in July. Same time in May 2026, we have decided to keep the host plant branches so it would provide shade for the vanilla plants. We're adding about 10 more vines to our vanilla population.

We have revived our meat broiler chicken in our Permaculture Farm and it has done wonders to the plants on our farm. We have sold our first batch and the chicken waste has gone to our fruit trees. It has done wonders. We're on our second batch now and they're 5 weeks. They should be in the market by 30th May.

A photo shoot day yesterday 7 February to capture the changes that has taken place, over the past year. We planted more than 100 cacao plants in January 2026, revived our backyard chicken business as a crucial contributer to our Homestead Permaculture Farm, and we hope to harvest our 1st ever vanilla beans around June/July. Our small and budget Homesteading has transformed our backyard to a small fruit forest. It's been quite a journey and most importantly, seeing and experiencing the relationship between the ecosystem and mankind. We have a great bonding and we protect each other. Post Covid-19 (year 2022 to date) our small Navua community economy has been very very slow. It has been a real struggle for micro business owners.

Micro to Small Entrepreneurs in our small Navua community was struggling for the past 3 years. We relied heavily on the people in our community to return to a more permanent job and take home a regular income. We relied on job creation regardless how small it may be. We needed stability in our community earning to help.our small business afloat. But the lack of it made us dependent on government support especially on grants, to keep our head above water. Thefts on our dalo crops and coconuts is a sign of families struggling - I'm not making excuses on their behalf but when we see the type of accommodation that they dwell in, we can only feel for them.

However, there seems to be a sign of stability in our small Navua community economy. Confidence in spending is slowly creeping in and is evident.

We can only hope that 2026 and beyond will get us back to pre year 2021 (when Covid-19 struck Fiji).

Don't give up Micro to Small Entrepreneurs. Light at the end of the tunnel is shining brighter ✨️ 🙏
