Cognac is brandy.  But not all brandy is cognac.

Brandy simply means “distilled wine.” But to earn the name Cognac, it must be made here, in the Cognac region of France, using specific grapes and a precise double distillation in copper stills.

That’s what gives cognac its refined, elegant character and what sets it apart from brandies made elsewhere.

So, what’s cognac actually made from?

Cognac begins with grapes, mostly Ugni Blanc, small, acidic, and perfect for distillation.
