Bonjour! Welcome to my blog.

My name is Namrata. I moved to Paris in late 2017. As a vegetarian, I was very sceptical about my options in this beef-lover’s paradise. However, I have grown to love the food culture in and around Paris and managed more than comfortably with respect to vegetarian options in most places. This blog is my endeavour to help all of you vegetarians who enjoy eating out to look for places that will satisfy your palate. There is plenty of food in France for vegetarians to enjoy!

A few tips from me are:

Be prepared to see just one or two vegetarian options on most menus. Initially, I used to be very disappointed at my lack of liberty to choose but once I overcame this, I began to enjoy my meals.

A lot of restaurants and cafes may not specifically have any vegetarian options on the menu. Do not hesitate to ask the staff if they have anything they can offer you. I have been lucky on many occasions when a vegetarian salad or pasta was made especially for me. Many places can also substitute or eliminate the meat element of a dish; so don’t be shy, just ask!

Many people still do not know the difference between vegetarian and vegan. If you are the former, ensure you specify that you do eat cheese, as this will make it easier for the restaurant to prepare a vegetarian meal for you. (France has the best varieties of cheese!)

Develop a taste for salads and greens. Being from India and spoilt for choice of vegetarian meals, I was accustomed to looking at salads with a predisposed suspicion. But the French really do know how to make a flavourful and satisfying salad, and most times this will be enough to get you through the entire meal. It is also much simpler for a chef to whip up a veggie salad than another main dish.

Some vegetarian friendly cuisines are: Indian, Italian, Mexican, Greek and Lebanese.

If you don’t already have it, download the application ‘The Fork’ on your smartphone. It allows you to find restaurants in any region, and applying filters can easily locate the nearest and best restaurants offering vegetarian options. A lot of them have discounts too!
