I was pleasantly surprised by this bottle of IroulĂ©guy (pronounced ee-roo-lay-GĂE), served straight from Vins chez ToĂź't âs personal cellar during a regional wine tasting at ChĂąteau de GĂšre.
đ The AOP IroulĂ©guy is known for its characterful wines, and this one from the Mourguy estate is no exception. âšïž
đ Independent winemakers, the Morguys have been working on the family property of the same name for several generations. The Mourguy family vineyards, grown on exceptional terroirs in the hills above Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (French Basque Country), benefit from an ideal climate and optimal exposure, allowing the grapes to develop rich and complex aromas.
đ· This cuvĂ©e, Etxeldea, made from a blend of 70% Tannat, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, won me over with its structure, finesse, and complexity.
The colour is medium garnet, with notes of black fruits, spices, and forest floor. Unlike the other wines from the estate, this one is aged in barrels, which explains the woody and vanilla aromas. The wine is well-balanced, with silky tannins and a long finish.
Couldnât have asked for a better introduction to IroulĂ©guy wines! đđ
And thanks to Fabien from Vins chez ToĂź't for sharing this beauty with us! I understood immediately why it had a special place in his personal cellar âšïž
