New interview up today!

Nicolas Groffier at Domaine Robert Groffier likes to change things around. Not just a little bit. He split his Chambolle-Musigny premier cru Les Amoureuses into two cuvées. The grand cru Bonnes Mares faced the same destiny. And more recently he has turned some of the vineyards into a new domaine

– I want to play more, but I can’t do that with Domaine Robert Groffier. I need to be free, he explains. […]

New interview up today!

Pouilly-Fuissé has changed. The development of vineyard-specific cuvées. The arrival of the premier crus. The move towards domaine-bottled wines. Guillaume Renaud at Domaine Pascal Renaud in Solutré-Pouilly has seen this firsthand. His family has been producing wine here for the past century.

– The premier crus have changed a lot for us, he says. They came at a time when the wines of the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits had become too expensive. Our premier crus are less expensive and are slowly taking the place of Meursault, Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet. We were not considered as part of Burgundy before, we were the Mâconnais. Now with the premier crus our wines are Burgundy wines. People had a hard time wrapping their heads around it before. There were no premier crus, but the names of the climats, the vineyards, were on the labels. This has put the spotlight on the appellation. Since the premier crus were introduced we have changed about half of our clients. […]

New interview up today!

A change of generations is underway at Domaine Catherine & Claude Maréchal. With the arrival of Antoine Maréchal in 2022 the domaine now has a father-son team at the helm. Pinot noir is king here. There is some chardonnay. And very little aligoté.

– I did my first vinification with my father in 2022, explains Antoine Maréchal. Then I did an internship in New Zealand the first half of 2023, before I came back here for the remaining part of the season. The following year I went to Australia to vinify. Since mid-April 2024 I am back here full time. […]

New interview up today!

It all started with a horse. And then another one. Caroline and Thibaut Pariset at Domaine de l’Aubraine rode in to the wine world on a Comtois horse and set up shop in the northern Mâconnais.

– We are quite unusual in that respect, says Thibaut Pariset. Our path over the past 20 years has been a different one. Originally I was a forester and my wife worked with horses. […]

No matter where you go in Burgundy each village has its fair share of winegrowers. Rosey, a small village in the Côte Chalonnaise, halfway between the Mâconnais and the Côte de Beaune, is different. Here, the Lagarde family are the only winegrowers. Meet Lucile Lagarde at Domaine Lagarde in today’s interview.

New interview up today.

This is Savigny-lès-Beaune. Descend in to the Pavelot cellars and you will find a multitude of Savigny wines, held together by a few common denominators and separated by the terroir.

– We have the same guidelines for all our wines, says Hugues Pavelot, whether it is a Bourgogne rouge or a premier cru. We strive to take care of each vintage in the best possible way, to favour the fruit, the freshness. That is the essence of the pinot noir. And to go with that, depending on the appellation, there is certain kind of tannins we are looking for, always silky tannins. Dry tannins are not allowed. […]

New interview up today!

Up in the Hautes-Côtes things have changed over the past two decades. A new generation of winegrowers, a different approach and climate change have turned this part of Burgundy into a very interesting area.

– For me the Hautes-Côtes is the future of Burgundy. There is still room for development, with many possibilities. We can keep up with climate change. You can keep the freshness in the wine, says Lucien Rocault at Domaine F***y & Lucien Rocault. […]

New interview up today!

Clos Napoléon in Fixin has a peculiar history. Named after the French emperor this premier cru has been a monopole for a very long time. It has doubled as an orchard, dynamite has been used when replanting and soil is almost nonexistent there.

– It has been a monopole of the domaine since the 1950s, says Pierre-Emmanuel Gelin. It was replanted in 1955-1956. At the time it was only half a hectare, at the bottom of the clos. My grandfather cleared the upper part, removed all the fruit trees, from the restaurant up to Clos de la Perrière. [...]

New interview up today!

Both the domaine and the village have moved from red towards white. During the last generation Domaine Jean-Pierre Maldant in Ladoix-Serrigny has increased the white wine portion considerably. It is now 30 per cent of the annual output.

– Ladoix has been known as a red village, but now much is planted with chardonnay. The white sells well, but the red even better. I produce 10 000-12 000 bottles of red Ladoix. And I never have enough to sell. Because it’s a good price/quality ratio. Fifteen years ago it was much more difficult. The Aloxe-Corton wine were not particularly expensive back then, but when the prices began to go up the Ladoix wines gained in popularity. [...]
