The Scottish Fishermen’s Trust is supporting The Scottish Fisheries Museum to transport pupils from across Fife to the Museum to take part in hands-on curriculum-linked activities that will inspire curiosity and foster a deeper connection to Fife’s fishing heritage.

Commenting on the initiative, Scottish Fishermen’s Trust Chairman, Ian Gatt said: “The Scottish Fisheries Museum is a valuable national resource. We are delighted to help to bring pupils from local schools into the Museum to get a feel for what it was like to be involved in the fishing industry in years gone by and, perhaps, kindle some young people’s interest in future careers in a forward-looking and sustainable sector.”

Following a joint operation with Northumberland IFCA, we’ve secured a successful prosecution against the owner and master of a fishing vessel for repeated offence, including landing undersized, berried and mutilated lobsters.

They received fines and costs totalling £6,060, a 3-year ban from holding any IFC permit, and forfeiture of 70 illegally set lobster pots.

This outcome sends a clear message - working alongside local partners, we will take firm action to protect our marine environment and fish and shellfish stocks for the future.

Was just thinking today about how many jobs our customers help support.
Probably 20 involved on the boats, 5-8 at the harbour? Another 16 at fish processing premises, 2 mechanics who work wonders to keep the vans going, and probably many more.

By keeping the shellfish in Scotland we can keep a lot of money in Scotland and this filters back to our own economy.

Thanks to all who support us and enjoy our seafood.

Public Consultation on Nephrops FMPs

The Scottish Government has now launched a public consultation on West Coast of Scotland Nephrops and North Sea Nephrops FMPs.

https://consult.gov.scot/marine-scotland/west-coast-north-sea-nephrops-fisheries-management/

These two plans have been jointly prepared by the following UK fisheries authorities - Scottish Government, Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs and the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs in Northern Ireland - in collaboration with the Sea Fish Industry Authority (Seafish), as well as with input from industry, scientists, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and Statutory Nature Conservation Bodies (SNCB). The consultation will run for 12 weeks - from 25 March 2026 to 17 June 2026. Stakeholders can submit consultation responses through an online questionnaire, or by email or post as outlined on the consultation page. We will be looking to hold a number of online sessions with stakeholders between end of May/beginning of June.

Following the consultation, responses will be analysed and the FMPs amended before publication later in 2026. This is an important opportunity to help shape the future of Nephrops fisheries management across the UK.
