We welcomed the Oxford Guild of Weavers, Spinners & Dyers today for a natural dyeing-day!
We had over 30 people attend to tie-dye fabric with indigo using pebbles and string and dyeing wool in onion skins and walnut husks. Wendy also managed to get plenty of attention!
Di has been a member of the guild for around 30 years (she didn't enjoy trying to work that out...) and the group visit the farm most years for a day of crafts and cake!

Have you heard…
Chilton Wensleydale yarn is available! This has been a dream of mine for many years and it’s amazing that my girls’ curls have been spun into this gorgeous yarn! Getting the opportunity to design these blends and work out colours I would want to use for my own knitting has been a joy.
Please get in touch if you would like some more information and to buy some, more news and colours to follow soon 😁

An update from day 2 of the Suffolk Show (Official). After winning her hog in wool class and then progressing to win both female breed champion and breed champion yesterday, we are delighted to say Wendy is the Suffolk show rare breed champion!!
As it's only our second show, we are over the moon with how well she's done. A huge congratulations to all the other entries, especially the Texels who dominated the interbreed final!
Wendy and Di are now having some much needed R&R back at CGF after the excitement!

Today was our first attempt at showing our Wensleydales , we took one White and one Black ewe hogg in wool to the South Suffolk show. They came first and second in their longwool class and then Chilton Wendy the white one went on to win champion female and then supreme Champion sheep. We can't quite believe the haul we have come back with. Special thanks go to Sue and Serena for their advice and encouragement.

These Beef Shorthorn heifers are just over a year old now and if they stay in our herd as breeding cows it could be 3 more years before they produce any income for the farm. If you think of what has happened in the world in the last 3 years, its very hard to produce budgets and develop strategies moving forward.

Livestock farms delivering High-value Natural Capital by way of Swallows and Martins, plus much more besides. What a fantastic place to work (yes, I have surveyed this farm and the wider parish) and a place to enjoy wildlife whilst trying to make a living off the land. Way to go, Duncan Parker and Chilton Grounds Farm.
This week is Wool Week. A week celebrating British Wool! Here's 5 reasons why it so important to support the British wool industry:

🐑 Last year fleeces averaged 32p/kg with some hill breeds as low as 15p/kg and the NSA reports that this year’s prices may be down 50%. 1/3rdof the total wool sent to the wool board last year was unsold. These prices struggle to cover the unavoidable costs of shearing for most farmers.

🐑 Only 5-10% of wool clothing products in the UK are from home-grown farmers, the majority imported from the southern hemisphere from sheep breeds with finer wool.

🐑 The import of wool when so much of our own is wasted adds unnecessary carbon footprint to an eco-friendly fibre. It is a natural by-product and 100% biodegradable, it is a great alternative to the plastic products (e.g. polyester, nylon) that dominate the market whilst supporting British farming.

🐑 The Welsh government has committed to using more British wool for public building insulation, hopefully leading the way for the rest of the UK to follow.

🐑 Wool is breathable, durable, absorbs and releases moisture dependent on the air around it and traps air leading to great insulation.

Next time you're buying clothing, bedding, carpets, insulation, see if there is a British wool alternative! See Chilton Grounds Farm, our farm vet Charlie's home farm, to source British wool or the following businesses who have Wool week discounts: https://www.britishwool.org.uk/wool-week-2020. Feel free to tag any other British wool businesses in the comments below.
