🐝 Why you might hear about "Tropi mites" in the news

There's a tiny parasite called the Tropilaelaps mite that's been spreading toward Europe and was recently reported in Turkey. It attacks honey bee colonies and can seriously weaken or kill them.

Why it matters : Honey bees pollinate a huge share of our fruits, veg, and other crops, and of course, they make our honey. A widespread mite problem could mean less honey, less bees and in the long term less beekeepers.

If it reaches the UK: It's not here yet, but experts see it as a real risk down the line, following a similar path to how the Varroa mite spread decades ago. If it did arrive, it's harder to spot than Varroa because it moves fast and is tiny, so outbreaks could take hold before beekeepers notice.

May only be half way through the summer but for beekeepers we are already thinking about winter and next year. Here are 3 new small ‘nucleus’ colonies. Hopefully will get through winter and be ready for next year.
