So much calf admin! All the cows are vaccinated with Cryptium to prevent Crypto (awesome) and their calves have 3-5 days of colostrum before being trained onto the auto feeders. We prioritise first colostrum for their first 2 feeds, 2nd milking for day 2 and older for day 3-5 to optimise maternal antibody transfer. Sounds complicated but the system works a treat. The green collars are for when they’re calving so we don’t get mixups and I take them off when the calves are drinking well and have had all of their 2nd colostrum feeds. Then we genomic test all heifer calves out of cows with 2 generations of Holstein behind them, castrate the bull calves and then onto the machines they go to a semi-ad-lib feed curve. With calves you need ALOT of patience but I love it ❤️

This morning Marie Louise Stephenson joined Ian in the parlour as part of her 10,000 cows in 10 days challenge which kicked off yesterday raising money for RABI who provide really valuable emotion, financial and practical support to the farming community.

So an exciting thing happened…. We made it to the final 3 of Farmers Weekly’s Dairy farmer of the year award. We and our team are super chuffed! Today the boys are drying off the first of the cows for their summer holidays 😎 🌱 🐄

I’m taking dung samples to monitor worm egg counts and cocci - so far we haven’t needed to treat anything which is great for the heifers and soil ecosystems on the herbal ley block. These babies are now 10 months old and gleaming! 💚
