We were recently asked why we keep red napes when the retail price has dropped. One reason is how good they are at rearing,
The pair in the video are both two years old and was in a hack pen with others when they were observed courting each other. They were caught on the afternoon of the 25th of March, copulation was seen on the 4th of April but suspected a few days earlier. 1st egg laid on the 6th and a clutch of 3eggs were laid with skip in laying sequence between egg one and two.
Eggs removed today and two male red napes fostered under them. They were brooded immediately and fed within the hour. It is planned at fledging time, to add a clutch of half grown hybrids to complete their season.
So to recap, from hack pen to first time rearing, with a clutch of fertile eggs in between 25 days!
