Morning Cheesters 🧀

Thanks to Captain Jackson being a bit poorly with the heat of the last few days, it’s not been the best night’s sleep aboard Beanie.

The upside? I can now confirm that 4am Braunston is absolutely beautiful and wonderfully serene.

Also 5am.

And 6am. 😵‍💫🤣

The downside of not sleeping much is it gives my brain far too much time to think… and as many of you know, I am a world-class over-thinker.

Honestly, by 5:30am I’d mentally solved problems that don’t exist, created three new ones, and micro-planned the next six months of my life.

Exhausting.

Anyway… the heat finally seems to be breaking a little (thank goodness).

Evening Cheesters 🧀

We’re open tomorrow in Braunston from 10am and would absolutely love to see you.

You’ll find us moored above the bottom lock near the shop… and honestly, you really can’t miss us with the giant cheese flag 🤣🧀. You can also grab some gorgeous crusty bread from The Boat Shop Bottom Lock , perfect to go with your cheesy purchases.

While you’re here, do make a day of it.

We’re not part of the Historic Boat Rally itself (Beanie is but a mere youngster in historic boat terms 😆), but Braunston is absolutely buzzing this weekend.

Please do take time to wander down and admire all the fabulous historic boats, visit the land stalls, and of course support the floating café and sweet boat too.

Plenty to see, plenty to do… and naturally, plenty of cheese.

See you tomorrow from 10am!

Huge shoutout to the volunteer lockies today.

They were like coiled springs first thing this morning — organised, efficient and absolutely flying.

And what a cracking job they did.

Just look at that tally board! 👏

Boat after boat after boat through Braunston Flight, all handled with smiles, good humour and the kind of calm efficiency that makes it look far easier than it actually is.

Of course, even superheroes have limits, and with the temperature rapidly approaching “why do humans exist?” levels, they sensibly stepped down once the furnace really kicked in.

A well-earned rest I’d say.

Massive respect to all the volunteers out there keeping things moving in this heat. You’re absolute stars.

The fabulous Andrew and Cathy Haysom ( Jules Fuels - Southern Division) have just glided into the locks aboard Tadworth and Bordesley and, as always, made it all look ridiculously easy.

Morning everyone!!

It’s all go at the locks this morning. This is boat number 8 through already and it’s only just gone 9am!

What a little beauty she is too — Owl. Sadly I didn’t catch her number in time to do my usual detective work and report back with boat history. I apologise for this grave failure 😆

Later tonight, once the sun stops actively trying to kill us, we’re planning a wander around to admire the historic boats properly. I’m hoping we’ll be too busy over the weekend for much sightseeing 🧀

How’s everyone coping with this heat?

I’ve decided I’m now only discussing the weather as though I live in the 1800s…

I fear we are being slowly braised in our own parlours. Even with every aperture flung wide, the air remains as thick and oppressive as a duke’s drawing room after scandal.

The dog is wilted.
The cheese is anxious.
The Co-Pilot is questioning all life choices.
And I may shortly take to waving a fan dramatically and demanding smelling salts.

Send help. Or ice cream.

Captain Jackson has a completely irrational but very real fear of anything that buzzes.

Flies.
Bees.
Wasps.
Basically if it buzzes, he’s out.

It’s not unusual at this time of year to find him hiding in the shower.

Yes. IN the shower. 🤣

With the weather this warm, closing the boat up overnight simply isn’t an option. I’m not particularly keen on sleeping in what feels like a floating steel sauna.

So with the plan to leave the waterside hatch open overnight, I decided to sort a solution.

And by “I knocked this up” I of course mean… I assembled a kit and managed not to swear too much.

A magnetic mesh screen.

Really easy to cut to size and fit. Fully removable too.

Result:
✔️ Fresh air
✔️ Fewer bugs
✔️ Happier Jackson
✔️ Better sleep for everyone

WANTED FOR DAYLIGHT ROBBERY!!!

Last seen fleeing the scene of a shocking ice lolly heist at The Boat Shop Bottom Lock

Suspects were described as loud, suspiciously amused, and making only a moderate effort to run up the towpath.

Shop owner Clare bravely pursued them, demanding payment and threatening lifetime bans.

Thankfully justice was served.

No ice lollies were harmed.

We regret nothing 🤣🍦

P.S. Before anyone clutches their pearls… yes, of course we had paid for the ice lollies. Nobody was harmed in the making of this scandal. Clare was fully in on the chaos 🤣🍦

Huge congratulations to our friends at Northampton Cheese Company — their incredible Black Garlic Cheddar has just picked up Bronze at the International Cheese & Dairy Awards 2026 🏅

And yes… we’ve got it onboard.

If you haven’t tried this one yet, think rich, creamy cheddar with the deep savoury sweetness of black garlic. It’s bold, savoury and a bit addictive if I’m honest.
