The fields at Greenfield have turned yellow... and this long dry spell is changing the rhythm of the place.

Our young apple trees are looking stressed, the sheep are drinking far more than usual, the chickens are spending more time in the shade, and the vegetable beds need much more thoughtful watering.

We know many people are dealing with far tougher conditions, we're lucky - But here are some of the small practical things we’re trying to keep things healthy.

🍏 In the orchard - We’re watering young trees slowly, mulching around the base, keeping mulch away from the trunk, and watching for curled or scorched leaves.

🐑 With the sheep - The grass is dry and yellow, so we’re topping up fresh water more often and supplementing with hay/feed while the grazing is poor.

🐓 For the chickens - We’re checking water, shade and airflow, especially during the hottest part of the day. Panting, wings held out or lethargy are signs to watch out for.

🥕 In the veg garden - We’re watering at the roots, mulching where we can, prioritising seedlings and vulnerable crops, and accepting that not everything will thrive this year.

Like many gardeners and smallholders we’re adapting as we go and hoping for rain.

Using Raw Sheep Wool in the Garden - So Far, So Good...

We've kept a small flock of sheep at Greenfield for a good few years now and, every year, I vow to do something useful with the fleece.

After an exciting but ultimately slightly disappointing dalliance with carding and spinning (one day I'll learn properly!), I've started experimenting with using raw sheep wool in the garden instead.

I'm not claiming to be an expert, but over the last few months I've been trying it as a mulch around vegetables, flowers and fruit bushes. With the dry weather we've had, I've been particularly impressed by how well it seems to retain moisture, along with a few other benefits too.

Slim pickings on the grass front... its strange having to supplement with hay in the middle of sunmer. Another dry week ahead, hoping for some rain soon! 🌦🌦🌦

A throwback to these two troublemakers. Life with goats is never dull. If there was mischief to be found, they found it. If there wasn't any, they invented it!

They were a lot of work but a lot of fun. Still hard not to smile when these old videos pop up. 🐐💚

Fledgling season has to be one of the best things about this time of year.

Robin fledglings are a real treat to see because they're so well hidden. These two are a pair we rescued and released a few years ago.

I like to think they're still nearby. 🐦
