The mahonia is one of a few winter flowering plants that can produce both pollen and nectar in cold weather and 75% of flower visitations by bees in winter are to this plant alone. Also not forgetting that once pollinated the birds get a valuable food source from the edible berries. Another benefit of this plant is that it produces so many clusters of flowers that the bees don’t have to fly far to the next flower to get their meal.
Although the honeybee has a tongue length of 6.6mm and the bumblebee tongue length is longer 7.8 – 8.9mm they both benefit from the small flower size which enables easy access to the nectar at the base of the flower.

Update on the tree bumblebees in the birdbox
They are expanding everyday and enjoying their surroundings. You can see in the video how they've sealed the entrance to the birdbox and have left a small hole to go through. This is to protect them from the elements and predators making it easier to defend their nest

FIRST BUMBLEBEE RESCUE OF THE SEASON.

The bumblebees had taken up residence in a bird box on a fence in a garden. The home owners didn't realise this until they went to take the box down to clean it for this years nesting season. As you can imagine their shock when the bumblebees came out. The home owners contacted us as they didn't want them harmed but because they have young grandchildren who play in the garden they were worried that if they knocked the fence the bees would get disturbed so we relocated them back to the farm and placed the box in one of the crab apple trees. They have happily settled in and are enjoying their new surroundings.
