Today I had the pleasure of attending the Affineur of the Year Finals 2026 — Britain’s premier cheese affinage competition. An incredible opportunity to sample the competition cheeses, meet talented cheesemakers and affineurs, and celebrate the craft of maturation at the highest level.

Huge congratulations to all the finalists and winners, and especially to the new Fellows of the Cheese Academy, including 👏🧀

Great to catch up with and learn from so many passionate cheese people:

Ahead of the competition spotlight, some of the most exciting voices in the world of cheese came together for a day of expert-led masterclasses, deep dives, and connection with fellow makers, affineurs and cheese lovers.

With a fantastic line-up of speakers, we explored four different dimensions of maturation — from the microbiology of bloomy rinds and traditional PDO practices, to modern cave innovation and professional ageing environments.
