There is so much beauty to be found in a market garden that is free of herbicides and pesticides...along with the 6 foot weeds, of course 😆 (but these also provide a home and food for a range of local wildlife so we wouldn't want to get rid of them all)!

Growing produce following organic methods is labour-intensive at the best of times...But when you water everything by hand, using watering cans, you are going to lose a lot of crops during successive heatwaves with very, very little rain.

Our broad beans and peas stopped producing flowers and withered, whilst our celeriac, cauliflower, lettuce and spinach all bolted early 😔

I am sure you agree that it is heartbreaking to pull up crops before a harvest when they have been sown as seeds, pricked out, planted up, watered, and protected from pests. However, we need to practise our resilience and try again if we are going to successfully adapt to the changing weather conditions.

Meanwhile, if you ever fancy helping out with some watering, please give us a shout!!

Many of you know this fella from his insistence on using the puddles on the road instead of the pond in the garden to wet his feet 🫣 It doesn't hurt to slow down on watercress corner anyway though. He seems to have unintentionally become our mascot!
