📰 Freshfields Market featured on BBC News

Shoplifting continues to have a serious impact on independent retailers across Croydon. Freshfields Market’s Ben Selvaratnam spoke to the BBC about the reality faced by local businesses, with repeated incidents resulting in financial losses and, at times, abuse and aggression towards staff.

Croydon Council is now exploring a pilot scheme to electronically tag prolific shoplifters who have been banned from shopping areas.

As Ben highlighted, identifying repeat offenders is only part of the solution — effective enforcement is essential if measures like GPS tagging are to make a meaningful difference.

Protecting our shops means protecting the people who work in them and the communities they serve. 🛒🤝

🛍️ Protecting Croydon’s shops, staff and high streets

Retail crime has a real impact on local businesses — from financial losses and increased security costs to the pressure placed on hardworking shop staff.

Croydon Council is exploring a GPS electronic tagging pilot aimed at prolific shoplifters, working with police and partners to examine how exclusion zones could help prevent repeat offending. (https://www.instagram.com/reel/DdVsvuvEqVN/?stkn=bHlxbWdsYnk2eW9m)

It’s encouraging to see new approaches being explored to support our retailers and create a safer environment for businesses, employees, residents and visitors across Croydon.

Strong businesses need safe high streets. 🤝🏪

🚨 BEATEN AND ASSAULTED FOR SIMPLY DOING OUR JOB

A man entered our store with a child’s buggy, concealed stolen goods inside it and attempted to leave without paying.

When our team calmly asked him to return the goods or pay for them, he grabbed a weapon and assaulted members of our team.

This individual is a prolific shoplifter who has already been banned from our store, yet continues to return. We believe he is likely to be based locally.

Do you recognise him?

Please do not approach him. If you have any information, contact us privately or report it directly to the police.

Retail workers should not be threatened, beaten or assaulted simply for doing their jobs.

Please share this post. Someone will know who he is.
