Explore the world of Chardonnay with Master of W**e

Join us at Danbury Ridge on 6 November for the first in our series of intimate masterclasses, drawing on John’s decades of experience in vineyards and w**eries around the world.

Through six w**es from Ch*****ne, Burgundy, Tasmania, Central Otago and Essex, John will explain why they taste the way they do, exploring the influence of place, climate and the decisions made in the vineyard and cellar.

A NEW CHAPTER

English still w**e began with broad questions: which varieties perform best, where should they be grown, and which regions offer the greatest potential?

As those foundations become better understood, the questions become more precise.

What distinguishes one vineyard from another? How do differences in soil, topography, mesoclimate, clone and rootstock translate into the finished w**e? And when w**es from several sites are tasted from the same vintage, can those differences be seen clearly?

The release of Spar Hill Vineyard Chardonnay, River Valley Vineyard Pinot Noir and Sleipnir Block Pinot Noir from the 2024 vintage marks an important development in that process.

Together with Octagon Block, these w**es allow us to look beyond the Crouch Valley as a single place and begin exploring the individual vineyard expressions within it.

From Burgundy to Essex: Harvest 2026.

Danbury Ridge W**emaker Liam Idzikowski has recently returned from Burgundy, where he joined Pierre and Marianne Duroché for a second harvest.

It was a revealing vintage to experience first-hand, with repeated periods of extreme heat, accelerated ripening and wildfire above the vineyards at Nuits-Saint-Georges.

Back in the Crouch Valley, the parallels have been difficult to ignore. Essex has also seen wildfires across tinder-dry farmland, yet our vines remain green, healthy and free from visible water stress. The water-holding capacity of London Clay has played an important role this season, while yields remain optimal and the fruit remarkably clean.

Ripening is now moving quickly. Next week we begin picking for Solstice, marking our earliest harvest yet, with Pinot Noir for still w**e also expected to be picked in September for the first time.

Liam reflects on the 2026 season in Burgundy and Essex, the next Danbury Ridge / Domaine Duroché cuvée, and a vintage echoing 2018.

We’re incredibly honoured to receive this recognition from Oz Clarke and Tom Surgey in English W**e Heroes 2026.

Their full tasting note (swipe to read) describes our 2023 Chardonnay as:

“Crystalline English Chardonnay. Immediately impressive nose – silk-smooth Sicilian lemon peel citrus, rich ripe yellow peach and golden gage fruit. Very high quality oak sheen, hazelnut and Madagascar vanilla.”

A landmark moment for English still w**e.

We are delighted to share that the 2023 Octagon Block Chardonnay has been named among the top three Chardonnays in the world at London W**e Fair’s Greatest Chardonnay Showdown.

The tasting was judged blind by 18 leading industry figures, including Masters of W**e, Master Sommeliers and international w**e critics, and brought together benchmark Chardonnays from classic and emerging regions around the world.

Alongside its place among the world’s top three Chardonnays, our 2023 Octagon Block was also awarded Best Emerging Region Chardonnay.

For Danbury Ridge, the Crouch Valley and English still w**e, this is a defining moment!

Last week, we finished planting Bartonhall Creek, a new vineyard in the Crouch Valley.

Positioned beside the river in one of the warmest pockets of Essex, the 14-acre site is planted entirely to Chardonnay. High sunshine hours and the moderating influence of tidal waters create the slow, even ripening that allows Chardonnay to develop fully.

The soils are old river terrace, with gravelly loam over London Clay. The gravel brings warmth and drainage, while the clay helps retain moisture throughout the growing season. Together, they provide the balance and consistency we look for when planting a site for still w**e production.

It will be several years before the vineyard reaches maturity, but Bartonhall Creek already feels like a very special site.
