A landmark moment for English still wine.

We are delighted to share that the 2023 Octagon Block Chardonnay has been named among the top three Chardonnays in the world at London Wine Fair’s Greatest Chardonnay Showdown.

The tasting was judged blind by 18 leading industry figures, including Masters of Wine, Master Sommeliers and international wine critics, and brought together benchmark Chardonnays from classic and emerging regions around the world.

Alongside its place among the world’s top three Chardonnays, our 2023 Octagon Block was also awarded Best Emerging Region Chardonnay.

For Danbury Ridge, the Crouch Valley and English still wine, this is a defining moment!

Last week, we finished planting Bartonhall Creek, a new vineyard in the Crouch Valley.

Positioned beside the river in one of the warmest pockets of Essex, the 14-acre site is planted entirely to Chardonnay. High sunshine hours and the moderating influence of tidal waters create the slow, even ripening that allows Chardonnay to develop fully.

The soils are old river terrace, with gravelly loam over London Clay. The gravel brings warmth and drainage, while the clay helps retain moisture throughout the growing season. Together, they provide the balance and consistency we look for when planting a site for still wine production.

It will be several years before the vineyard reaches maturity, but Bartonhall Creek already feels like a very special site.

A wet start to the season has made it difficult to get machinery into the vineyards without risking soil compaction and churning up the alleyways.

Thankfully, our woolly friends are back on duty 🐑

They’re taking care of the weeding and mowing down old cover crops on their little hooves. Gentle on the soil and perfectly adapted to the job.

Pruning season continues across the Danbury Ridge estate.

We use a gentle pruning approach, guided by Simonit & Sirch principles, looking at each vine holistically rather than following a fixed formula. Every cut is considered in the context of the vine’s past, present and future.

This work is carried out by specialist, trained hands, laying the foundations for vine health, balance and longevity for years to come.

This vintage marked a special chapter at Danbury Ridge as we welcomed Pierre Duroché of Domaine Duroché in Gevrey-Chambertin, for his inaugural harvest with us.

Working alongside our winemaker Liam Idzikowski, Pierre helped shape a small collaborative cuvée of Danbury Ridge Pinot Noir selected from four estate-owned vineyards.

The fruit was mostly destemmed, with around 10% whole bunch, and fermented in a single concrete vat using a pied de cuve — a natural starter culture of wild yeasts from Pierre’s 2025 Gevrey harvest. The wine is now ageing in five seasoned barrels from the Duroché cellar, two from our own, and one Clayver egg, the first of its kind to be used in the UK.

Even at this early stage, the young wines display wonderful clarity and aromatic precision, a reflection of the care applied in our vineyards and the shared craftsmanship between Essex and Burgundy.

Harvest 2025 has drawn to a close at Danbury Ridge.
Over three weeks, fruit was gathered from across the estate, with the final pick completed on 9 October, around two weeks earlier than usual.

The growing season was exceptional: warm, steady and notably dry, allowing fruit to ripen evenly through late summer. These ideal conditions produced small, beautifully concentrated berries with the highest levels of phenolic maturity we’ve ever seen. The young wines already show remarkable clarity, freshness and purity, promising great potential in the cellar.

Guided by our winemaker, Liam Idzikowski, the team continued to refine the precision and individuality of each vineyard parcel. This year we were also delighted to welcome Pierre Duroché of in Gevrey-Chambertin for his inaugural vintage at Danbury Ridge. Together, Liam and Pierre crafted a small cuvée from Danbury Ridge Pinot Noir, a landmark moment of craftsmanship between Essex and Burgundy.

Domaine Duroché and Danbury Ridge Wine Estate have formed a partnership that brings together two families united by shared values of precision, place, and innovation. The result will be a limited release Pinot Noir made at Danbury Ridge, showcasing a carefully selected parcel from one of the estate’s vineyards in the Crouch Valley.

Though produced in very limited quantities, the cuvée represents a broader meeting of regions, traditions, and philosophies. Above all, it is a celebration of shared passion — for English terroir, for Pinot Noir, and for the commitment to exploring potential.

Flint Wines Ltd will exclusively distribute the wine and the first release will be available from 2028.
