Help small veg grower recover from Storm Corrie, organized by Lorna Walker

Thanks to everyone who sent messages of support and came to help with the clearup after Storm Corrie- we're having a hard time, and it's great to know you are there for us. We need to get ourselves back on our feet and start planting seeds in only four weeks time. Several people suggested we set up a wee fundraiser to help us do this, so here it is. If you feel able to donate please click the link below.

We took a battering in storm Corrie last night - tunnel wrecked; seasonal workers caravan took off and landed upside down; chicken house wrecked; pig house roof missing; 2 blades sheared off our wind turbine. Thank you to our neighbours who helped with the clearup. Power still out. We are pretty downhearted Crofters this evening.

What a wonderful day with 35 farmers and Crofters here at Knockfarrel, for the Landworkers' Alliance northern winter gathering. Skillshare sessions on butchery, orchards, wool felting and more. Sunday lunch cooked up with lots of local produce, music and laughter. Great to work together with so many inspirational small producers. The future is bright.

Spent the day checking animals and buildings after the storm - got off quite lightly with one damaged polytunnel door. Hope you have also been fortunate. Piggies are all happy - they have really thick coats (though this chap's nose looks a bit cold!).

Christmas is a wonderful opportunity to share the best food with your family and friends. On the croft, we like to make a big effort to have some tasty local produce for you: dry-cure free range ham; pancetta, once a year maple bacon, and of course our mildly famous hand raised pork pies. Non-meaty goodies include fermented chilli sauce, fresh lemon curd and home made preserves. And our veg boxes will include everything you need for Christmas lunch including organic brussel sprouts 'on-the-vine'.

COP26: Scotland still facing stiff tests to meet carbon reduction targets

Yesterday's COP 26 agreement did contain some new and useful elements. But we're still on course for 2.4C heating even if ALL commitments are fulfilled. We were interviewed by the Scotsman for our reaction - you can read it here: https://www.scotsman.com/news/environment/cop26-scotland-still-facing-stiff-tests-to-meet-carbon-reduction-targets-3457180

Scotland’s role in cutting carbon emissions has been praised by environmental experts but they said it still faced stiff tests over meeting ambitious reduction targets, eliminating fossil fuels and greening food production.

Hey - we made it to front page news! Look at our crofting banner! What a day - 100,000 people marching through soggy Glasgow. Great atmosphere and we met small farmers from all corners of the world. Let's hope the second week of COP 26 brings real results.

We're on the train to Glasgow to join the Climate March! Crofting and farming can soak up carbon in our soils and trees - never mind net zero, all farms can be carbon negative. Here's our banner - let's hope the paint doesn't run in the rain! See you there!

We're having a bumper veg harvest on the croft this year, with almost every crop we've planted coming good. We don't want to waste any of it, so here's a rundown of where it all went this week:
- 75% of the best produce went out to our 180 veg box customers. With 14 different veg in each box
- 20% went wholesale to other local food producers in the Highlands, to sell to their customers
- And 5% we donated to Highland Food Bank - who are now distributing our fresh veg, as well as surplus eggs.
And what was past harvesting or munched by caterpillars, we fed to our delighted spotty pigs!
After it was all picked we then cleared the veg beds and stacked the residue on the compost heap, to nourish the soil next year.
No food waste here!

I normally would walk along way to avoid broadbeans, however I have just cooked up yours from last veg box, added lemon juice, olive oil, and seaweed salt and woweeeee I'm a total convert could happily go vegan on these😍 also frequently make chocolate beetroot cake and I wish I taken a photo of the precooked mix I have never seen it glow before, just with the freshness of your beetroot🥰
Excellent veg box yet again.👏Beetroot and the fennel are particularly welcome. Thank you
