GlenWyvis Distillery

GlenWyvis Distillery GlenWyvis is the world’s first 100% community-owned, fully sustainable, distillery producing both single malt whisky and our GoodWill gin. GlenWyvis may be a new name, but it's history dates back to the 17th century, where it's origins can be found in the Ferintosh Distillery.

Now, through a dramatic evolution where the famous Ben Wyvis Distillery was renamed Ferintosh, and the nearby Glenskiach distillery in Evanton opened and closed it's doors in unison, we have the opportunity to witness a new beginning. In keeping with the history of Ben Wyvis a modern heating system is installed in our micro distillery, powered by the energy produced from the existing farm renewabl

Negroni with a GoodWill Twist - GlenWyvis

If you are like us and narrowly missed Negroni week, don't worry!

To celebrate this iconic cocktail we have produced a Negroni with a GoodWill twist.🍸

To make this iconic cocktail, you need balance. Equal measures of GoodWill gin, Campari and Vermouth are required. We're pretty sure you won't taste a better one than this Negroni made with our very own GoodWill Gin. The natural orange flavour in our gin, gives this a unique flavour that packs a punch, perfect for Negroni! The deep orange colour of this cocktail reminds us of the beautiful sunsets we have experienced this summer over the Cromarty firth.

Ingredients
25ml GoodWill Gin

25ml sweet vermouth
Orange wedge to garnish!

GlenWyvis Distillery Community Benefit Society wishes to express our sorrow on the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and to extend our condolences to the members of her family, now mourning their loss.

For over 70 years she showed, by the warmth of her personality, a way of celebrating the very best characteristics of the country she served. She inspired a whole generation to find joy in some form of public service. She embraced change and welcomed advancement with cheerfulness and good humour; while always showing an unmatched resilience in the face of difficulties and challenging times.

Today, we join all those at home and abroad in raising a parting glass.

Did you know...

In 1879, the first distillery to use the name Ben Wyvis was built by Dingwall ironmonger, agricultural merchant and town baillie D.G Ross. It took 90 men nine months to blast away the Dingwall hillside to make way for the distillery, which operated until the economic depression of 1926. The distillery was eventually demolished in the 1990s.

📣 Calling our friends in Germany! 🇩🇪

GlenWyvis Whisky Batch 02/18 is now available via Kirsch Import - House of Spirits. Keep your eyes peeled for stock in specialist stores and online in Germany soon.

Geschmackvolles Gemeinschaftsprojekt:

(UVP: 69,90 €)

Tasting Notes:

This year we introduced a few new events and are really excited about our Behind the Scenes with the Brands!

On Saturday night we will be welcoming Dornoch Distillery, Elixir Distillers, GlenWyvis Distillery, Lochlea Distillery, Loch Lomond Whiskies and Nc'nean Distillery and asking them to delve into their story a little more. Each company has garnered so much interest in the industry and are all so very different. With their common goal of making fantastic liquid - so enjoy one of their drams whilst they tell you what makes them... them, and get your chance to ask any questions you may have 🥃

💥 EXHIBITOR SPOTLIGHT 💥

Established in 2015, GlenWyvis Distillery holds claim to being Scotland’s first community-owned distillery, and even more impressively is the first to be powered by 100% renewable energy; powered by its own wind turbine, hydro scheme, solar panels and biomass boiler, operating completely off-grid!

Today is National Gratitude Day 🙏🏼 - and I'm very thankful to have had the opportunity to film at GlenWyvis Distillery this afternoon! What a cracking team, operation and surroundings they have at their location in the hills above Dingwall!

They've also got some big neighbours, too! 🐄
Around this time last month I took a notion one dull Saturday afternoon, so I headed into the studio and had a play with a couple of whisky casks, and a bottle from GlenWyvis Distillery.

🥃 Distilleries We're Watching... 🥃

GlenWyvis Distillery

Today we're going to take a look at Glen Wyvis and their unconventional start, and why that makes them a distillery to watch.

Glen Wyvis is based in the town of Dingwall, situated close to the Black Isle peninsula. The area has a rich history with distilling, with the site of the famous Ferintosh distillery situated close by, a particular favourite of the one and only Robert Burns. His sadness at the distillery's closure in 1784 is well recorded in his 1785 poem Scotch Drink:

"Thee, Ferintosh! O sadly lost!
Scotland lament frae coast to coast!"

A distillery named Ben Wyvis was later established in the Dingwall in 1879, but soon found itself in troubled waters financially. The distillery was later bought by the Ferintosh Distilling Co. in 1893 and renamed Ferintosh distillery, a homage to the distillery lost in 1784. The new Ferintosh enjoyed a stable life for some years before suffering from global dips in demand, ultimately closing forever in 1926. Some of the distillery's warehouses survived for a while before being sold for housing redevelopment in 1993. The void left by the closure of Ferintosh stood for nearly a century.

In 2015, the Glen Wyvis distillery was founded just outside of the town of Dingwall. This was no usual distillery, however, as in 2016 a record-breaking open share offer was launched. Over 3,000 individuals invested in the distillery, making it the first ever 100% community-owned distillery, and healing a wound that stood for 90 years. In parallel, the distillery also greatly focuses on sustainable energy sources for production, utilising wind, hydro, solar and biomass energy power.

The Glen Wyvis inaugural release launched in 2021, featuring a diverse cask make-up of Tennessee Whisky barrels, Moscatel casks and ex-Scotch whisky casks. The second release saw a slight change in the cask selection, this time utilising Oloroso hogsheads in place of the Moscatel featured on the previous release.

----
Highlights:
* Fascinating history
* Community ownership
* Differing styles of cask utilised between batches
---

As more and more whisky fans emerge around the globe, it's important that the roots of this now worldwide industry are remembered. The unique ownership of Glen Wyvis is a testament to the deep connection felt by communities and their history; the desire to revive and protect the art of whisky production in areas with a long-standing history of distilling. Many distilleries, like Ferintosh, are of course "sadly lost" and may never be replaced, but stories like Glen Wyvis bring with them new hope and excitement, something to celebrate "from coast to coast".

You can try Glen Wyvis at Grain & Glass. The second release of Glen Wyvis is our Dram of the Month for August at just £5 a dram.
