Limescale costs more than you think.

In hard water areas, scale deposits build up inside pipes, boilers, heating coils, pumps, appliances and machinery.

That build-up acts as an insulator, forcing water-using equipment to work harder, use more energy and cost more to run.

Even 1mm of limescale can increase the energy input required by a boiler by 7%. A boiler using untreated hard water could consume 20 to 30% more energy.

The cost does not stop there.

Limescale can also:

Reliable process cooling is essential in plastics manufacturing.

At a PLAPASA production facility in Ecuador, scale formation and biological fouling within the cooling system were beginning to impact efficiency, increasing maintenance requirements and threatening long-term system performance.

To address the challenge, two Colloid-a-tron water conditioners were installed—one protecting the mould cooling circuit and the other treating the cooling tower supply serving the heat exchangers.

The results demonstrated the long-term benefits of effective water conditioning:

• Improved water clarity and progressive reduction in algae growth
• Reduced scale formation within cooling circuits
• Maintained flow capacity through cooling lines
• Improved cooling performance and process stability
• Clean heat exchangers with no significant scale accumulation

Cotto Tiles faced a complex cooling system challenge where both scale and oil contamination made treatment difficult.

As part of the Thai Cement group, the plant relies on mould machines cooled by a recirculating water system. The circuit suffered from silica and calcium deposits, made worse by heavy oil contamination. Various chemical and non-chemical treatments had been tried previously, but none were successful.

A Magcat water conditioner was installed on the cooling circuit, sized to manage the full system flow and target both new and existing scale.

After six months, the results showed:

Scale deposition stopped completely.
70% of existing scale was removed.
Cooling efficiency improved across the machines.
Energy and maintenance costs were lowered.
Continuous protection was achieved without the need for chemicals.
This case highlights how Magcat performs in demanding ceramics manufacturing environments where conventional methods fail.

When people think about treating hard water, the conversation often focuses on limescale.

But what about the minerals themselves?

Calcium and magnesium are the minerals responsible for water hardness and limescale formation.

They are also naturally occurring, healthy minerals found in drinking water.

Unlike salt-based softeners, catalytic water conditioning retains these minerals while helping prevent them from forming hard scale deposits

This is one of the key differences between water conditioning and traditional salt-based softening.

Rather than removing minerals from the water, catalytic water conditioning changes how those minerals behave. The treatment helps prevent them from forming hard scale deposits while allowing the water to retain its natural mineral content.
