THE HISTORY OF NAPIERS

Napiers is an independent company with humble beginnings dating back to 1860. Our founder, Duncan Napier was born in 1831 and abandoned within hours of his birth. He was taken in by an innkeeper and his wife, who beat him and treated him little better than a slave

At the age of 9, he was apprenticed to a baker and found himself with a cough triggered by the flour dust that he simply could not shake off. Inspired by his mentor, John Hope, he left home at 15 and began to attend Scientific Botany classes in search of a cure for his cough. It was later when he joined the Edinburgh Botanical Society that his interest in herbs grew that he developed his famed Lobelia Cough Syrup. The syrup was an instant sensation, and Duncan decided to become a herbalist. On the 25th of May 1860, he opened a herbal shop and the people of Edinburgh queued for hours to see him and get a herbal cure for their ailments. Nowadays, we supply herbal remedies to people the world over and continue to follow Duncan’s dream “to provide an affordable choice of natural health care for all people”. We remain true to our past, developing combination herb formulas (known as the tonic herb principle) to treat the whole person and the whole body. We also make many of our medicines at traditional practitioner-strength dose levels. Our mottos is TRIED • TESTED • TRUSTED and we live this daily. Our herbal medicines and therapeutic skin creams have been tried by generations of people, who have tested them and return to us decade after decade, who have trusted us and who still do. We are dedicated to the best of health and wellbeing through the use of herbal medicine & other natural therapies and providing a safe alternative to chemical medicine.

Most of us don’t get as much fibre as we’d like 🌾

Psyllium husk is the fibrous outer coating of Plantago ovata seeds and a natural source of soluble fibre. Cheryl takes ours as a simple way to support her daily fibre intake.

Our herbalists’ tip: always take it with a full glass of water.

How do you get your fibre in? Tell us below 👇

Did you know eyebright is a little wildflower that has been used in herbal traditions for centuries? 🌿

It’s the star of our Eyebright Cream, alongside chamomile, chickweed and wheat germ oil. Keep it by your bed for winter, when cold air and central heating leave the skin around the eyes needing a bit of extra care.

It’s light and cooling, and sinks straight in. Find it here: https://napiers.net/products/napiers-eyebright-cream

✨ What is gotu kola, and can it really give you glass skin? ✨

Cica is everywhere right now, but did you know it's just another name for gotu kola? 🌿 Our Edinburgh herbalists were using gotu kola long before anyone shortened it to "cica". It's in our products and our apothecary, where you'll even find it as a tincture.

Cheryl's glass skin routine keeps it minimal:

💧 Hypochlorous Spray to start
🍊 Vitamin C Serum: gotu kola with stabilised vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and liquorice root extract. It's lightweight and absorbs quickly, so it sits under your moisturiser without pilling
🤍 Finish with a moisturiser to keep your skin barrier nourished and hydrated

Give it a few weeks, because good skin doesn't happen overnight 💚

Visit Napiers' online shop to see our top glass skin picks.

Did you know Napiers began with a cough? 🌿

From the age of 15 to 27, our founder Duncan Napier had a dry cough that wouldn't go away. After learning about the herb lobelia, he made his own syrup. It brought him the relief he'd been searching for for 12 years and inspired him to open his own herbal shop in Edinburgh in 1860.

Today, we carry on his legacy with our Singers Spray, a soothing blend of honey, echinacea and elderberry to help comfort a strained throat. 🍯

Whether you sing, teach, present, or just talk a lot, it's a lovely one to keep in your bag.
