Gweilo Cantonese street food made by a passionate Scotsman. The name? Sound familiar?

It comes from Hong Kong, where “Gweilo” — meaning “White Ghost” or “White Devil” — was once a very cheeky nickname for pale, fiery-haired, strange-sounding foreigners.

The Six Nations is roaring into action this week and of course, it’s common knowledge that rugby lads love ribs — I mean, who doesnae? 🤤

So we’ve brought back our pure belter rugby ribs that got totally demolished (along with multiple pints) last time the rugby was on. 🏉

We’re even reusing some of the footage, They were bangin’ then, and they’re bangin’ now so why not. 😅💥

As you’ll see, while we were graftin fir gid reviews and biggin’ up the Burns Day spirit we got way more than we bargained for.

We were treated to the most confident, charismatic wee Scotsman, who recited a Rabbie Burns poem he’d memorised. 😍

He stole the show, and completely blew us away. It’s pure class to see Scottish pride in such a wee bairn. (His folks are definitely dain it right.)

Let’s take a moment to celebrate wee Aleks. 👏

He helped us choose the lucky punter who got the very last wonton — and, naturally, was very keen to try his hand at a wee interview.

Camera? Mic? No fear. Pure star energy. ⭐🤩

Burns Day done the Gweilo way 🥃

This Burns Day, we had the absolute pleasure of the lovely punters at ESF confirming just how barry our Barry Wee Wontons really are.

Dinnae just take our word for it — everybody kens they’re barry. 😎

Our Brand & Business Support Manager (read: glorified PA), Nicole, had an absolute blast - who wouldnae- handing out these wee bad boys as a Burns Day bonus, while the bagpiper did his thing in the background.

The vibes were immaculate.

As you’ll see… we got more than we bargained for.

Honestly, this is the best time of year — because we’re all about everything Scotland: the banter, the chaos, the tartan energy… and most importantly, the scran. And haggis? The best thing to ever grace a plate. End of. 🙄🔥 Of course with a Cantonese twist. We are Gweilo after all!

You didn’t think we’d forget about Veganuary, did ye?
Behave. 🙄 Just under 2 weeks left! You can do it! Especially with dishes like this one that prove vegan scran can still be pure filthy (in the best possible way of course). 😏

We always cater to the more moral among us with vegan options on the menu — but this month we’ve gone full hedonist mode and rustled up an absolute belter of a special.

Can you believe it’s almost Christmas… and we’re in full festive-feeds mode 🎄✨ Have you been in to try our cracking Xmas special on? It’s our proper cult favourite making a comeback… The Tattie Dog! 🌭🥔

Cam first did his take on this back when we opened our first restaurant, Junk, and it got rave reviews. Hot dog + potato… it just works.

My first ever was from a wee spot in Edinburgh called The Pie Maker and I fell in love instantly. We’re still not totally sure where it actually derives from — American corndog cousin? British pub genius? Scottish invention? Maybe just an Edinburgh thing? Honestly… no idea. Whoever came up with it is a total legend.

He thern reinvented it for Rabbie Burns Night at Street Food Sessions, ESF on our Auld Alliance Menu last year — swapping out the sausage for haggis, and instead of mustard we went for a creamy peppercorn sauce. We posted a wee phone video and it went bloody viral 🚀 Our chefs were equal parts stoked and raging because every one had to be hand-rolled to order… we were selling a s**t ton every day.

NOW… Nathan (with us through the whole journey and currently our staunch Prep & Development Chef here at Gweilo) decided it would be a cracking idea to reinvent it one last time… 👀🔥

Roast Hog Tattie Dog — £13
Roasted hispi & pork sausage wrapped in buttery spring-onion + Chinese bacon-lardon mash, encased in crispy hand-spiralled tattie. Served with extra mash and a rich Szechuan gravy. 🤯🤤
