In the mornings we garden in our Polytunnel at Cullerne Garden, caringly weeding, harvesting, composting and beautifying the space. We always enjoy a lengthy and very chatty tea break. For lunch we have our own table where many of us will help ourselves to the vegetarian buffet and others bring their own pack lunch. Spring has sprung! 🌱🌞And then swiftly departed…❄️🌧

We appreciated the warmer days as the seasons begin to change, slowly bringing life back to the gardens. Our enthusiastic and resilient group have been sharing some wonderful times together making it through the colder months with ease and grace.

It’s full steam ahead with preparation for the summer growing season. We’ve been sowing seeds, preparing beds, mulching, clearing remnants of the stormy weather and doing some ever so important weeding. We’ve also celebrated many birthdays, shared cake and laughter, gone on outings, upped our pottery game, experimented making play dough from scratch, joined in with community celebrations, practiced our theatrical skills, painted/decorated stones, explored music by fireside, and much more! Here are some photos from our most recent time together.

As the summer sets in we’re excited to welcome some new participants and are looking forward to having our core group of gardeners and creatives grow! 😊

Wishing you a happy New Year from all of us at Findhorn Bay Care Farm!

Sharing an overdue update of what we’ve been up to over the past few months:) Since our reopening in August we’ve been a bit quiet online due to the ongoing changes we’ve been adapting to since covid, the loss of facilities and the introduction of our new team, Emily and Tara.

It’s been a joy to welcome the group back to the garden and together we’ve comfortably settled into our new rhythm, which has included a delicious lunch of soup or baked potatoes in the Phoenix Cafe. We’ve been busy bees in the garden accompanying the seasons by harvesting beans, greens and berries, raking fallen leaves, and preparing the soil for next year. In the afternoon we’ve continued our creative explorations through pottery, art, games, music and baking.

We’re grateful for being able to gather again and are looking forward to spending time together in the year ahead and what the changing of the seasons will bring:)

Hi all,

At this time of spring, woodlands parade wood anemone and lesser celandine, house martins return and fresh salad greens abundant from polytunnels and wastepatches, I hope you are well.

It has now been 4 weeks since our Care Farm crew met due to the advice of many, and then the closing down of the Findhorn Foundation to visitors, due to Covid 19 and in support of keeping everyone safe and healthy.

I will keep everyone updated as to when we will restart this programme. At the very least it will be in a month, first week of May but this may change. In the meantime enjoy these pics from our last session at the beginning of March.

I can imagine Cullerne gardens is abundant with bees, blossom, backlog and brightness. I wish us all deep breath, dropped shoulders, blessings from the elements, and a smile from the very centre of your planet.

Best wishes,
Kristy xx

Cantraybridge - Home

On the 25th Feb we had our first outing in a long time... unfortunately I forgot to take pictures... I will try and bring the scene to life with my words. A merry minibus of Findhorn Bay Care Farm folk left sunny Forres and drove some not so familiar winding roads southwest toward Cantray Bridge College in Croy. They were met with an abundance of snow on the ground and the picturesque landscape of Scotland's specialist further education college for young adults with learning disability, autism or similar additional needs https://cantraybridge.co.uk/. We met exotic birds in an aviary including 2 massive macaws, ducks, chickens, goats and some friendly people. We sat and had tea and snack in the sun and enjoyed the atmosphere. Thank you to the staff at the college for taking sometime to chat with us and for all the work you do supporting groups to thrive. We then had lunch at the Transition Town Forres centre back in Forres and walked around their community gardens http://ttforres.scot/, what a fab venue and the gardens where very inspiring!

Sunshine but frozen Cullerne pond meant that last week we spent the morning inside the Cullerne garden meeting room with a roaring fire and making up and singing the '12 days of gardening' instead of the 12 days of Christmas. We then had a delicious meal at the community centre, beans, rice, potatoes, salad and a scrumptious soup! A few pictures of us waiting in line, Karen and Hugh enjoying a seat :) The afternoon we collaged a map of Cullerne garden as the beginnings of creating our new theatre stage... the garden itself, we will create according to the seasons and what is happening in the garden. We also added pictures to our song to help us remember it.

First day in Cullerne garden for 2020. First plantings of beets into our raised beds. Wheel barrowing compost, counted 1000 worms per barrow! Nourishing the soil in our polytunnel, Red Lion. Enjoying the first murmurings of spring, increased bird song and bulbs emerging! Thanks to the Cullerne garden team supporting our morning and inspiring a spring like step!

November into December saw us enjoying the wildlife at Sanquhar Loch, the wonderful collective music creations with Steve Pittam, the beginnings of festive season carols and Sean's favourite by the Pogues! Making stunning Christmas wreaths and enjoying our togetherness! It also saw us with 3 birthday parties, a goodbye to our favourite friend Martin and a hello and welcome to the wonderful Karen. Thank you to both for bringing your gifts to the Care Farm.

What a day! Where to start?... In the morning we created cute creatures out of clay and natural objects and went for a short walk around the dunes... Kristy, our new team member was showing us the animal tracks and we were trying to spot the birds hiding in the gorse. In the afternoon we were warming up next to the wood stove and listening to an amazing singer Steve who treated us to the collection of his songs and the classic heartwarming tunes of The Beatles. Great fun! And a BIG WELCOME to Kristy, our new Delivery Support Worker!!!

What a happy reunion after the festive break! Just look at these radiant faces! We had great fun making grains mosaics in the morning, followed by hilarious storytelling by Mike. It is good to be back, although the next session will be in 2 weeks time, as the Findhorn Foundation will be holding an Internal Conference next week. Keep well!

A busy day at Care Farm, full of festive activities! Our gardener Jewels took as for a walk in the garden in the morning and we visited all the areas we helped to maintain and cultivate this year. And we tasted some winter peppery greens which we planted just a few weeks ago. Not to all tastes as you can clearly see:) Birthday chocolate cake proved to be much more popular! We sat around the fire and sung carols and listened to Christmas stories while drinking 'mulled style'cranberry juice and eating mince pies. And if you think it could not get more festive, well, it could! In the afternoon we made beautiful Christmas wreaths...

Dear participants! Christmas is coming soon and we are starting to get into the festive mood!!! Next week we will spend only the first part of the morning working in the garden and after that, we will sit next to the fire singing carols and listening to Christmas stories... with mince pies and warming drinks of course! So put on your Christmas jumpers or hats if you have one and be ready for fun! At the last session on 18th December, we will have a final celebration in the afternoon when we will watch our 2018 photos and ... wait for the surprises!

Sunny and crisp morning in the garden yesterday...Lovely to be outside and get some fresh air and exercise, working with a fragrant bark chip! Some of us decided to stay indoors and to create colourful bird feeders which was quite messy fun!. In the afternoon, we were baking cookies - yummy! The delicious smell was so tempting, that we had to share them with our helpful kitchen's team and others, kids including!

A beautiful day and many smiling faces happily tending to the tomatoe plants today. There had been a bumper crop this year and now that they are spent we unravelled the tall plants and gave them to Evert to chop up for the compost. A cosy tea break all together and then a birthday to celebrate after lunch. After our meditation time we had yoga with Jewels. A perfectly lovely and merry day with many tickles and cuddles x

The Gaining Ground Team are busy working from home, and like many, juggling lambs, small children, home schooling and family life. We were planning a great final event at Findhorn with a learning Journey at Findhorn Bay Care Farm but as this is no longer possible, due to the impact of Covid-19 we have an alternative. Dr David Heaney, has been working on our Case Studies and will present his findings plus an interview with Scottish Crofting Federation Chief Exec. Patrick Krause to be shared on Friday 1st May across our social media. Once you have had a chance to watch and listen at your leisure, we would like to invite you to a virtual networking meeting on Wednesday 6th May at 6pm. #GGNewGround. A chance to catch up, give feedback, swap experiences and ask any questions of the team before the project finishes. If you would like to join the meeting please email Ailsa at [email protected] to be sent further details. The Case Studies, Toolkits, feedback and evaluation of the project will all be added to the website https://social.crofting.org/ Moray Leader Highland LEADER Programme Elchies Glachbeg
