GomoKimchi

GomoKimchi When my 큰고모 emigrated from Seoul, her mother sent her with kimchi starter and a handful of uncertainty. GomoKimchi is homemade, small-batch kimchi.

It's a preservation of our family story, it's diaspora and home—regardless of where we are.

🚨Gomo Kimchi is Closing, but…🚨

you have a handful of opportunities to learn how to make our kimchi before we do.

Join us for a workshop at the Gomo Kimchi factory. You’ll learn the basics of our kimchi-making process, from brining to jarring, even a little field trip to Chan’s so you know what to get, where to get it, and what to look for when you make kimchi at home.

It’ll be a small, casual affair, but seriously fun.

BYOB if you wish! (Mimosas and kimchi? Why not?)

Space is limited, with only 10 slots available. Sign up today!

Book a group or book out the whole workshop for a work outing or a party (in this scenario, we can move the workshop to a later time and dates can be more flexible, if preferred). DM/email for capacity minimum/maximum info.

*Note: Unfortunately, we can’t refund cancellations, but we’ll do our best to give you a slot at the next available kimchi workshop.

Where: The Glue Factory
Date: Saturdays, 30.05 / 13.06 / 27.06
Time: 11am–2pm
Cost: £65/person
Capacity: 10 slots
How to book: DM via social media or email: [email protected] (payment via bank transfer), let me know how many spots you need, your email, dietary needs, any allergy concerns (FYI, unfortunately, as the space isn’t big enough to have separate stations, we may not be able to accommodate for all allergies).

Includes:
Kimchi-making Demo
Free jar of Gomo Kimchi
Gomo Kimchi Tote
Gomo Kimchi Sticker
Factory Tour (such as it is, it’s just one big room 🤣)
Snacks

A common question I get is “What’s not vegan about kimchi?” Namely, in our case, it’s fish sauce.

Although I’m an unconscionable meat eater, is not, and as we started the journey of Gomo Kimchi, I worked to develop a plant-based menu for her.

Traditional Korean food lends itself to a plant-based diet without significant tweaking. Still, certain things, like kimchi, were tricky. In light of that, I love that our kimchi soup became one of our most beloved dishes at the shop.

For our next cooking workshop, we’ll be learning to cook a plant-based Korean menu, featuring our famous kimchi soup.

Many of these dishes were taught to me by my umma, or are variations on dishes she makes.

Space is limited to 8 people! (12 people is too many for the cooking workshops.)

Again, feel free to BYOB. (Few people take us up on this, perhaps we need to push it to a dinner thing?)

First come, first served.

*Note: Unfortunately, we can’t refund cancellations, but we will do our best to give you a slot at the next available demo, space permitting.

Thank you to everyone who came out today and made our first workshop so memorable! Had loads of munch fun talking kimchi with you all.

Thanks to Agne from .pastry for the cinnamon bun gift, which I earned with all the salad spinner action 🤣.

We’ll definitely be doing this again, after we’ve done a couple Korean food workshops.

Next month’s pork belly kimchi jjigae 🥘 workshop is now open to book, while spaces last.

I appreciate everyone who joined, asked great questions, and listened to me blather on about not just how to make kimchi but our family story as well. I’m grateful for your time and enthusiasm.

🚨Have you ever wanted to learn how to cook a Korean meal from a professionally trained, award-winning chef? Well, keep scrolling because that’s definitely not me 👀.

But, just because the Allison St shop is shut doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some of our greatest hits (as well as some specials we never got around to rolling out) at home.

Continuing our workshop series, Gomo Kimchi will be offering Korean cooking demos.

The menu for these demos will vary from one to the other, with space limited to 12 people each session.

You will learn the basics of how to make a full, homemade Korean meal as taught to me by Umma Kim, including 1 main, two banchans, and a starter. We’ll taste as we go, go over the general approach to a typical Korean meal, and chat.

Think of it like a dinner party but lunch, and you learn cool stuff.

BYOB, a little Saturday afternoon soju? Soju Screwdriver? Soju and Yakult? We’re not here to judge.

First come, first served.

*Note: Unfortunately, we can’t refund cancellations, but we will do our best to give you a slot at the next available demo, space permitting.

Where: The Glue Factory
Date: Saturday, 21st of March
Time: 11:00-14:00
Cost: £75/person
How to book: DM via social media or email [email protected] with the following info: your name, email, number of people

Includes:
Cooking demo and lesson

Gomo Kimchi tote
Gomo Kimchi sticker
Leftovers (if there are any!)

March’s main: Pork belly kimchi jjigae
Starter: Chive and spring onion jeon
Banchan: TBD

FYI, as you’ve probably noticed, March’s menu is a non-vegan menu, April will feature an all vegan menu. Again, menus will vary from one workshop to another.

🚨Gomo Kimchi Workshop🚨

One of the most common requests we get is for a kimchi workshop. And though we’ve had a few here and there sponsored by Glasgow Uni and the Civic House (thank you both!), I’ve always wanted to be able to host a workshop in our own space. Well, finally, we’re making it happen (seriously, it’s been years of people asking).

Join us for a workshop at the Gomo Kimchi factory. You’ll learn the basics of our kimchi-making process, from brining to jarring, even a little field trip to Chan’s so you know what to get, where to get it, and what to look for when you make kimchi at home.

Last night was our last official service at the shop in Govanhill.

Thank you to everyone who’s visited over the years, our regulars ( who was our first customer and also came on the last night to bookend our time on Allison St. We’ll miss seeing you every week !), and everyone who’s come to the Kids’ Table dinners the last couple months. We’re so grateful to you all. Thank you to our friends and family who’ve helped and supported us in more ways than we fully express. We love you.

A lot has happened during our time in Govanhill, a lot of kimchi has been made, a lot of new friends made, some wonderful collaborations with other businesses (like and ). I’ve personally grown and learned so much. It’s been a humbling and rewarding experience.

We can’t wait to see where this next chapter takes Gomo Kimchi.

Again, you’ll still be able to find our kimchi at local shops (regularly—sporadically): Chan’s Ltd, , , .coffee, and more to come!

As a final thank you to Govanhill, we invite you all to come say bye at the shop this Saturday, the 27th. We’ll be there from 12–4 giving out some free food while it lasts (we’ll have some tteokbokki and cup ramen, possibly more?). Come share a story, hangout, read a poem, write a poem, buy a last jar of kimchi from the shop, bring a cheeky bevy to pour one out in mourning(?), or just wave as you walk by.

Remember, this isn’t goodbye, I just won’t see you around as much anymore…

See you around.

감사합니다 😊

🔥Guest Alert!! Friday the 19th, one day only!!🔥

Heading into our last official service next week, we’re excited to welcome to help us say goodbye.

Mack has cheffed at some of your favorite spots around town and is one half of the amazing . He’s also been incredibly supportive of Gomo Kimchi from the start.

This is the potential menu, but may be subject to change:

Chicken terrine with pickled lotus root
Pork, prawn and Kimchi patties, seafood sauce
Potatoes
Pandan cake
Strawberries and cream

Spots are limited, so book quickly!
6:30 & 8:30 on Friday the 19th.

We’d hoped to make this a regular series for the Kids’ Table in Govanhill, where our talented friends can have free reign of our kitchen, but we feel so honored and incredibly lucky to have Mack as a guest chef for our one and only spotlight before we shut the shop down.

DM to book. FYI, due to limited space, you may have to share a table. See you soon.

We’ve come a long way since taking over this space after our first markets at .market.

Govanhill has been good to us. I’ll never forget this humble little space where I and Gomo Kimchi grew so much.

Govanhill gave me the space and support to tell my family story and share a piece of myself with the community. We’ve met so many amazing individuals and made many dear friends, had countless conversations that enriched our lives.

Alas, it’s time for this chapter of Gomo Kimchi to give way for the next. I don’t say this with a heavy heart because I feel nothing but joy and gratitude for the gift of this space in one of my favorite neighborhoods in Glasgow.

Thank you Govanhill. Thank you, friends.

The end of September will mark the closing of the Gomo Kimchi shop in Govanhill.

Until then, I will continue the Kids’ Table on Saturdays and hopefully bring in a guest or two to help us say goodbye.

Share a table with us and tell me about your day, week, life. Or just have a good laugh over food and drink with some strangers and friends. (DM to book)

Don’t worry, though! Gomo Kimchi will continue. We’ve recently moved into a production unit at the and we’re incredibly excited about the opportunity this new community and phase presents our future.

The Glue Factory space will allow us to increase kimchi production and do the occasional Kids’ Table pop up, so keep a lookout. You’ll also still be able to get Gomo Kimchi at local vendors like and , as well as new vendor Chan’s in Cowcaddens. We’re also in talks with other vendors around the city, so keep an eye out for that as well.

It’s been an honor, Govanhill. Love you. See you around.
