ALEX IN COLOMBIA: THE FINAL DAY ☕️

Hi guys, it’s Alex, signing off from Colombia.

Over the past two weeks I have met some of the most wonderful people who have shared their knowledge and coffee journeys with me.

I’ve been exposed to people all across the value chain; producers, farm managers, researchers, agronomists, biochemists, green experts, roasters, drivers, consultants, packers, all of which are necessary for the industry to flourish.

Spending two weeks in Colombia, meeting producers, and experiencing first hand the challenges of growing coffee has given a new appreciation for the efforts that go into creating excellent quality in the cup.

Hundreds of years of knowledge, experimentation, and research is behind every cup of Colombian specialty coffee, alongside dozens of people behind the scenes, and the producers that dedicate themselves to improving the quality of their coffee. Without all of these factors, Colombian coffee wouldn’t be what it is today.

Special thanks to Omar from Cafe Imports, the women of ASMUCAFE, Jairo from Banexport, Paola and her family at Finca Patio Bonito, and Miguel from Raw Material. All for being incredible and hospitable hosts, and for going over and above at every opportunity to ensure my experience was exceptional.

Thank you to everyone else along the way for giving me memories I won’t forget.

Alex

A winning night at the Glasgow Business Awards. 🏆

Last night, Dear Green picked up two accolades at the Glasgow Business Awards: Winner in Sustainable Development, and a Commendation for Green Champion. 🌱

The Awards are the city’s benchmark event for business excellence, leadership and innovation, so we’re absolutely delighted to receive these special honours.

The real highlight of the night though was our table… this was the first time in our 15 year history we’ve had a team large enough to fill one!

We have been on an incredible journey, growing from a solo passion project into a wonderful and dynamic team of coffee professionals. To share the moment together last night was very special indeed.🫶

We’re so proud of what we have achieved together, and we’re just getting started! Thanks so all of our customers and our supply chain partners for making this journey possible! Here’s to more nights like this. 🙌💚

ALEX IN COLOMBIA DAYS 12 & 13 ☕️

Alex and the group visited Asocafé Tatamá, a community facility in Santuario where producers can deliver their dried coffee and have it assessed for quality, sample roasted, cupped and graded. Each of them took a sample of coffee parchment from a producer, milled the coffee, assessed the quality, calculated the value of the coffee, sample roasted, and cupped it.

The following day, they visited Asocafé’s other facility, where coffee is delivered after being assessed and graded. From here, sacks of coffee are milled to remove the parchment layer, and sorted to remove defects. The coffee is then either packed into sacks for export, or roasted and sold to the local market, concluding the value chain in Colombia.

ALEX IN COLOMBIA DAYS 10 & 11 ☕️

On the next phase of the Plant to Port course, Alex and the group moved away from El Fenix and travelled to the Invercafe processing facility in Chinchiná to learn about the next stage in the coffee life cycle. At the facility they were introduced to Harry, a coffee professional who has researched coffee varieties and processing methods in depth.

Harry and Miguel showed them the differences between washed, natural and honey processed coffees at Invercafe, and explained the challenges with each method. They were also given an in depth presentation on different methods of coffee fermentation, the variables that need to be accounted for, and the challenges with fermenting coffee.

It was very engaging being able to sort, float, mill and process coffee cherries first hand, and see how missing key steps along the way can negatively impact the coffee. It gave a real appreciation for all the effort required to improve quality in the cup.

The following day, they were also at Invercafe. This was a very theory intensive day. They milled a sample of washed coffee to remove the parchment, and sorted it to count any defects in the sample. Using the data from sorting, they could assess the quality of the coffee, categorise it based on Colombian standards for washed coffee, and calculate the price the producer will be paid for their harvest.

ALEX IN COLOMBIA DAY 9 ☕️

In the morning, Alex and his group cupped a selection of coffees from Quindío, comparing the differences between varieties and processing methods.

In the afternoon, Miguel and Mario took them round El Fenix and explained the proper techniques for propagation and pruning, and some of the pitfalls if these aren’t done properly. One being pigtail, where the root curls on itself if the coffee saplings aren’t grown in the right soil conditions.

The true result of this is only seen years later: once the tree has matured, it’s more susceptible to damage and less robust in harsh conditions.

About last night… 🏆

Last night we picked up Sustainable Business of the Year at the Scotland Food and Drink Excellence Awards 2026, and we’re still buzzing.

As a proud B Corp, this proves to us, and hopefully others, you can put sustainability at the core of a business and still build a successful one.

Huge thanks to Scotland Food & Drink, and massive congrats to everyone else on the shortlist. It was a great event and fantastic company to keep.

None of this is possible without our team, who show up and graft every day. Our growers and suppliers, who share our standards and our values. And of course our customers, who choose us bag after bag, cup after cup. ☕️

This one’s for all of you. 💚
