🍷 Staff Must Try | Grace’s Pick of the Week

This week Grace has been reaching for the Thistledown Gorgeous Grenache 2024 — and with a name like that, it was always going to be hard to resist.

For Thistledown, Grenache is very much their favourite child, and this is a great example of how they draw out its elegant side while making something genuinely appealing. Aromatic and lifted on the nose, it leads with wild strawberries and red cherries, backed by gentle spice. Unfiltered, with only a small proportion seeing old oak, the fruit stays firmly front and centre — layered, textural and finishing with a ripe, compelling savouriness that keeps you coming back.

Behind it are Giles Cooke and Fergal Tynan, both Masters of W**e, who founded The Thistledown W**e Company in South Australia’s Adelaide Hills in 2010. Their philosophy is simple: lithe, energetic w**es that showcase the best of South Australia’s rich patchwork of old vine Grenache sites, made with intelligent, low-intervention w**emaking. Small batch, handmade and always full of character — this is exactly that.

Slightly chilled, it’s brilliant with pizza or tomato-based pasta, where the bright red fruit and gentle spice echo the sauce beautifully. At £17.50 a bottle (or £15.50 in a mixed six), it’s a gorgeous Grenache that more than lives up to its name.

🍺 Thursday taps are here, and this week we’re pairing a just-picked green hop seasonal with a juicy hazy pale.

🌿 Elusive Brewing — Green Hopper (Pale Ale) — a seasonal harvest pale ale built around fresh hops, bringing ‘just-picked’ aroma and flavour with tropical and stone-fruit character. Early autumn is always the time when green hop ales like this come along. This year’s Green Hopper features fresh, undried Harlequin hops grown in Herefordshire and rushed straight to the brewery. With a subtle bitter edge, it’s the tropical passionfruit and pineapple notes, along with a bit of peachiness, that stand out. Elusive are based in Finchampstead, Berkshire, where traditional brewing know-how meets thoughtful innovation.

🍑 Siren Craft Brew — Suspended In Topaz (Hazy Pale Ale) — a juicy, soft and hazy pale ale brimming with lychee, peach and apricot hop character, finishing with a clean, refreshing bitterness. The point of this sessionable hazy pale is to balance soft, juicy fruit character against a brisk, clean bitterness, with neither dominating and the two complementing each other nicely. Siren are based in Finchampstead, Berkshire, and have been one of the UK’s most innovative craft breweries since 2013.

A fresh-hop harvest pale and a juicy hazy, both available to take home in 2 pint, 4 pint, and 5L minikegs. 🙌

🎃 Spooky season is here, and so are the b**rs!

Elusive Brewing very rarely brings back previous brews, which is what makes the return of Carve’n Yams so special. This pumpkin coffee porter brings together everything you’d want from a dark, rich porter with the flavours of pumpkin pie: coffee, cinnamon and pumpkin, all wrapped up in a smooth finish.

The coffee is a two-coffee blend from Anonymous Coffee, and Elusive have tweaked the grist, yeast and spice infusion since the last release for a smoother, more balanced profile.

With darker nights drawing in and temperatures dropping, we can’t think of a better b**r to settle in with this Halloween. We only have 24 cans, so pop in or order online before they disappear 👻

🍷 Staff Must Try | Felix’s Pick of the Week

This week Felix has been reaching for the Château Coudray-Montpensier Chinon 2024 — a Loire Cabernet Franc that hits the sweet spot between freshness and fruit, with a bit of history thrown in for good measure.

Cabernet Franc can be a tricky grape to pin down. In the Loire it sometimes goes lean and leafy; in hotter climates it can veer into jammy territory. Chinon, at its best, finds the middle ground — and this is a fine example. Blackcurrant and plum come through clearly, backed by a touch of spice, smooth tannins and a fresh lift of acidity. There’s a little oak for polish, but the fruit stays firmly at the centre. The result is a Loire Cabernet Franc that feels generous without ever losing its bite.

The château itself is one of those proper medieval Loire landmarks — Joan of Arc apparently stayed here during the Hundred Years’ War, and the vineyards have been here for centuries too. In 2005, Dr Christian Feray of Château Moncontour in Vouvray took the reins, initiating significant restorations to both château and vineyard. The terroir — a mix of clay, limestone and sandy soils — is ideal for Cabernet Franc, and it shows.

Brilliant with roast chicken, pork from the grill or herby veg. At £18.50 a bottle (or £16.50 in a mixed six), it’s a beautifully balanced Chinon with real character and a story to tell.

🍺 Thursday taps are here, and this week’s lineup takes in a bold red IPA, a textbook American pale ale, and a crisp Sussex pale made for l***r drinkers.

🔴 Stardust Brewery — Antares (Red Ale) — a bold red IPA where rich caramel malt meets piney American hops, bright citrus and a light tropical streak. The bold red colour belies a certain lightness of touch. Cascade hops give fresh and lively grapefruit and a touch of resin, and Simcoe adds a little extra depth. Smooth and gently toasty, it’s full of flavour and not at all heavy. Stardust are based in White Waltham, just outside Maidenhead, quietly building a reputation for quality b**rs across traditional and modern styles.

🍊 Only With Love — Daisy (American Pale Ale) — a textbook American Pale Ale, with pine, orange zest and grapefruit coming through before a clean, bitter finish. Built on the archetypal hop pairing of Cascade and Centennial, Cascade brings grapefruit and floral lift while Centennial adds pine and orange zest on top. The citrus and pine flavours and clean, refreshingly bitter finish hit just the right note. Only with Love are based just outside Uckfield in East Sussex, with an ethos built around mindful drinking and wellbeing.

☀️ Three Acre Brewery — Extra Pale Ale (Pale Ale) — bright, citrusy pale ale from Sussex that’s crisp, clean, and built to charm l***r drinkers. This one started life as a brewing mishap, but turned out far too tasty to abandon, and now it’s a bit of a summer staple. Light, fresh and seriously thirst-quenching, it’s packed with zesty new-generation English hops that bring a citrusy lift without going heavy on the bitterness. There’s a clean, l***r-like finish that’s hard not to love.

A bold red, a classic APA, and a crisp pale for l***r drinkers, all available to take home in 2 pint, 4 pint, and 5L minikegs. 🙌

Autumn chicken needs w**e. 🍗

By October it’s slower-cooked, heartier meals with deeper flavours that start to make sense as the evenings draw in. Chicken is a good anchor for this time of year—familiar, versatile, and well suited to the deeper flavours that come with autumn.

Chicken Thighs Braised with C***r & Apples? The sweetness of the apples and gentle acidity of the c***r work well with mustard and cream. A Shadow Point Chardonnay brings nutty warmth—a really good match.

Chicken & Wild Mushroom Ragù with Pappardelle? The Bourgogne Pinot Noir has that earthy, forest floor character typical of this part of the world. Perfect with mushrooms as an integral part of the dish.
Roast Chicken with Squash, Cavolo Nero & Herb Butter? The Sella & Mosca Cannonau brings ripe red fruit and subtle spice that work well with the sweetness of the squash and richness of the herb butter, whilst sitting comfortably alongside the cavolo nero.

Chicken Thighs with Chorizo, Butter Beans & Smoked Paprika? The Prunus Dão brings bright fruit, a little spice, and freshness that sits comfortably alongside the assertiveness of the chorizo and smoked paprika.

When it comes to pairing w**es, chicken dishes are very versatile. Hopefully these pointers show you which combinations work especially well. Get 10% off all four w**es with code ACHCL10!

🍷 Staff Must Try | Debbie’s Pick of the Week

This week Debbie has been reaching for the Pyren Vineyard Earthscape Cabernet Franc 2023 — and it’s a genuinely exciting bottle from a corner of Australia that doesn’t always get the attention it deserves.

Cabernet Franc from Australia might not be the most expected choice, but in Victoria’s Pyrenees it can and does work brilliantly — and this is a fine example. If you know Loire Valley Cabernet Franc, this Victorian version offers a slightly juicier, plusher take. Fresh, bright strawberries and blueberries are front and centre, rounded off by subtle cacao and gentle sweet spice from a short spell in large, seasoned oak hogsheads, with a floral and herbal lift that gives it real elegance and character.

Behind it is Pyren Vineyard, tucked away in the Warrenmang valley in Victoria’s Pyrenees and established in 1999 by brothers Brian and Kevin Joy. Since 2012 it’s been run by Brian’s son Leighton, alongside viticulturist Graham Miles, who together have steered the estate towards low-intervention, organically minded farming with a clear focus on site expression. The elevated Pyrenees ranges offer a late-ripening pocket of warmth and altitude that suits varieties like Cabernet Franc beautifully.

Brilliant slightly chilled on its own, or alongside grilled lamb cutlets, roast chicken or a mushroom risotto. At £21.50 a bottle (or £19.50 in a mixed six), it’s a distinctive, characterful red well worth exploring.

🍺 Thursday taps are here, and this week's lineup runs from a traditional English bitter (that happens to be gluten-free) to a fragrant West Coast IPA and a single-hop Citra pale.

🍊 Ridgeway Brewing — Bitter (Traditional Bitter) — a traditional bitter using only English hops: amber gold with a floral edge, a hint of orange marmalade, and it's gluten-free. As familiar English-style bitters go, this is a benchmark. Amber in colour with a mix of gentle malt and firm, earthy, home-grown hops, it's a celebration of the traditional style, with a soft texture, good depth and a clean, dry finish.

🌿 Elusive Brewing — Sorachi Trail (West Coast IPA) — a classic West Coast IPA with a dry, needle-sharp bitterness and an intriguing streak of lemongrass and herb. Sorachi Trail is an interesting variation on Elusive's flagship Oregon Trail, swapping in Sorachi Ace hops. The resinous, bitter backbone stays, but lemongrass and coriander notes bring something of a different character. West Coast IPA with a fragrant twist. Elusive are based in Finchampstead, Berkshire, where traditional brewing know-how meets thoughtful innovation.

🍋 Thornbridge Brewery — Crackendale (Citra Pale Ale) — a very pale, Citra single-hop American pale ale with bright citrus and tropical lift on a lean, clean malt base. Crackendale is Thornbridge's take on the single-hop Citra pale ale style, keeping things straightforward so the hop can speak for itself. The Citra shows straight away with citrus and a touch of soft tropical fruit, the malt stays in the background, and the finish stays clean as the hop trails off naturally.

A gluten-free traditional bitter, a fragrant West Coast IPA, and a single-hop Citra pale, all available to take home in 2 pint, 4 pint, and 5L minikegs. 🙌

This month's Curious Case: Going Against the Grape 🍇

Some grapes have become so associated with particular places that finding them elsewhere is enough to make you check the label twice. Malbec without Argentina? Assyrtiko outside Greece? Alvarinho in the south of France? This month's Curious Case is built entirely around that idea — six w**es that break the rules about where they're supposed to come from.

Here's what's in the case:

🇪🇸 Spain — Bodegas Altolandon 'Mil Historias' Malbec 2022
When you think Malbec, you think Argentina. But this one's from the high plateau of Castilla-La Mancha, and it's a fascinating alternative — that same dark fruit, violet and pepper core, but leaner and more savoury than its Andean cousins.

🇨🇱 Chile — No es Pituko Carignan 2024
Carignan's homelands lie either side of the Pyrenees, in Aragón, Catalonia and Roussillon. But it's also carved out a niche in Chile, where it shows more up-front fruit and soft spice — a laid-back, easy-drinking take on a classically European grape.

🇦🇷 Patagonia — Saurus Pinot Noir 2024
Pinot Noir has colonised many cool-climate w**e regions around the world, but far-flung Patagonia is only just making its mark over here. Burgundian lightness meets New World bright fruit and minerality — with a distinctive South American signature.

🇱🇧 Lebanon — Chateau Oumsiyat Assyrtiko 'Cuvée Membliarus' 2024
Assyrtiko is synonymous with Santorini, where it's thrived in volcanic soils for centuries. It's rarely grown outside Greece — so seeing it turn up in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley certainly caught our eye. That crisp, taut, mouthwatering flintiness is all still there.

🇫🇷 Languedoc, France — Domaine de la Grande Courtade Alvarinho 2024
Alvarinho needs cooling maritime air and the right soils to thrive. The warm, dry Languedoc might not seem an obvious choice — but the sea mists that travel up the Orb and Lirou valleys near Béziers provide just the right conditions to make it excel.

🇵🇹 Douro Valley, Portugal — Vallado Prima Douro Branco 2023
Douro whites are typically structured, textured blends. Not this one. Made purely from Moscatel Galego, fermented dry, it bursts with grapey, floral character — a world away from what you'd expect from a regular Douro white.

£90 for the case, available from 7th October until end of November — with a 10% discount code for any of the individual w**es inside.
