Overdale holiday cottage Overdale is a self catering cottage sleeping up to 6 with stunning views over Wensleydale. Overdale is a 16th century dales cottage in Wensleydale near Hawes.

It sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms. It is comfortably furnished and has many additional features over and above the average self catering cottage - as an example, there are maps and guide books a plenty and there is a huge range of toys and children's books, as well as lots of games and books for all ages. It is located in an idyllic position with great walks right from the door. The views from the cottage

are breath taking. Overdale is an ideal base for an active holiday or somewhere simply to relax. There are plenty of interesting places to visit - both for adults and children. We (the owners) use the cottage ourselves quite regularly but we offer it - at reasonable rates - to other families, to help pay for its upkeep! Are you hefted? Noticed how sheep seem to just wander about, straying on to the roads in the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors? You may have noticed that large areas don't have fences but the sheep don't run away? How does anyone know whose sheep they are?

The sheep may look like they're wandering at will but they have an ancient homing device built-in. You'll even see sheep wandering freely in some villages, such as Appleton-le-Moors and Goathland, something they've done for centuries.

Sheep learn their “heft” or “heaf” from their mother, an instinctive knowledge passed on through the generations. Lambs start to develop the same attachment to a particular place, becoming "hefted".

Even when a farm is sold, the sheep may remain on that farm, with the instinct for a heft being passed down through generations of sheep.

I think some people feel the same about their own patch of land or home?
