One very snoozy pig this afternoon on the croft
This year along with our usual plantings I decided to try a no dig patch - I found the concept super interesting and really enjoyed the process, and here we are!!
We planted a few veggies and salads but I've become just a little obsessed with the cabbages!! I'm amazed they have survived the caterpillar and hen invasion earlier in July, but they are looking good and feeling quite pleased with myself and definitely flavour of the month - lucky Jimmy!!
As with all new trials it's been a learning process and lots to take on board and improve for next year, but just loving the results so far 🥬🥬
We're glad to finally have the sheep sheared lastnight...and so are the sheep!You can see the lift from the wool that they were ready. As we don't have a shed large enough to put them to keep dry we are very much reliant on the rain staying away! So 3rd time lucky and lastnight was the night!
One of the perks to Soays is they generally self shear so we did a bit of rooing to tidy a couple of them up a little - a successful evening!!
We will keep our wool again as sadly it's value is so low, so again this year we will make plenty use of it around the croft on some wee projects and plantings

This ewe is always such a good mummy and I think she is looking very happy and proud of her new arrival 🐑🤗 we will keep them in for a day or two depending on the weather and then they can go back outside and join the others

What a beautiful day!! ☀️
We took in the Soays and cross gimmers to the fank and gave them a boluse (slow release of essential minerals) and moved them to a new field. Tomorrow we will take the ewes and tups in.
Amy recorded some videos for a wonderful early years music organisation - featuring Winny the horse and some puddles!!
Finally a bonfire after tidying around the site, and a couple of drams to enjoy by the fire

Suspicious Soays!
Some of the ewes came to see if I had any treats while walking through the field today, and I was lucky to be able to get some close up snaps! No treats so they didn't stay long...
As much as the Soays can be tricky to round up and never go in the direction you'd like... There's something very special about this native breed and wouldn't be without them
And it's back across the road we go!! As usual the Soays zoomed off ahead before I was ready with my camera...
We will be sorting through the ladies and deciding which ones we will be selling at the Mart over the next week. Roo as ever was super keen and enjoying his job

They must have worked up an appetite after rooting up their paddock and making lots of mud and mess after the rain yesterday.. They're favourite thing to do of course!! I'm not sure what our chief inspector Roo thinks of it all 👀 time to prep their next spot on the croft!

Started our honey harvest recently and v.happy with how it tastes! The wee bees have done well 🍯😋
We have some limited runny honey (£8 fo 454g jars), and honey comb (£5 for 225g or £10 for 450g) available for sale. Send a wee PM if interested.
The last few years we have enjoyed planting a variety of tatties on the croft, in particular heritage/older tatties. They have such wonderful colours and tastes, and it's been really interesting to learn how they all cook slightly differently...!!

After this year's shearing, we had some bags of off cuts and daggings (the not so clean parts that don't get sold with the wool)
We decided we would put them to good use and put them around our young trees and shrubs, and the small amount left went on the compost heap. This will suppress weeds and will slowly break down over time acting as a natural fertilizer 🐑🐑🌳

As our Cheviots are nearly finished lambing, our Soays have started..
We had a very mini, but beautiful Soay x born. Isnt she just gorgeous!?! 💖
She is very lively and keeps up with her much larger sibling, and her mother keep a close eye. Its actually proving difficult to get photos of her shes so spritly!
We feel she needs a name.... All suggestions welcome 🙏😊💖

Lambing has commenced on the croft!!
3 sets of twins to start us off on our due date. Just love those ears...
We had a new and exciting experience on the croft at the weekend.... One of our pigs had her first litter of piglets!
We had a wee family game of ' guess how many piglets??' delighted i won with 9. Sadly one didn't make it, however the rest of the piglets and mum are doing great and we're getting lots of enjoyment from them

It's been a good week on the croft... Amy passed her trailer test, thank you to Heather at HLM Driving. We had good scan results from our ewes! Lots more twins this year. And we just collected some of our lovely free range pork from the local butcher which is now ready and available... Post to follow with more info. And the sun is shining! ☀️

We had some escape artists today!! 🤦🏼♀️ We got a call to let us know 2 of our pigs were out of their enclosure....thankfully they will do anything for food and came running back when we found them and shook the bucket! It looks like some folk were having a wee nosey at the pigs, however they did not lock or shut the gates properly when they left. Our piggies are normally waiting patiently for us to arrive, however today it was my turn to wait for them....although not for long!! Always enjoy seeing how happy they are - especially when you can see they've been busy in the mud!!
Our piggies are 100% free range. They have lots of space to enjoy turning up the ground and exploring, and a shelter to keep them cosy from the elements. Here's a wee video of them enjoying some breakfast this morning... Roo makes a wee appearance too!!
