IWAS celebrated its (belated) 50th anniversary in November 2021 with members and guests enjoying a superb meal complimented by fine wines chosen by our Cellar Master at Coul House Hotel.
Nicol Manson, our founder member, was unable to join us but a zoom link allowed him to address the gathering on the founding of the Society and the social drinking habits of the time.
After dinner we were entertained by our after dinner speaker Philippe Larue from L’art du Vin.
Our President Christina Cameron assisted by past President’s
Duncan Chisholm and Ormond Smith cut the celebration cake.

Still lots of online wine tastings to keep us happy, inspired an educated in lockdown! Check out Woodwinters, Great Grog, Jackson and Seddon, Wine Uncorked, Strong Water Company, Rose Murray Brown, Wine Education Service and many more. Some merchants are now doing tastings where the ticket price gives you 3 -5 x 100ml measures so you don't have to worry about working your way through 3 or 4 bottles!

Clear those diaries, pour yourself a glass of some lovely wine and enjoy the chat from the comfort of your own home. Sadly we don't anticipate tastings in person until the Autumn but in meantime there are lots of great online wine tastings to keep your tasting skills up!

Lockdown wine ideas #5 - meet winemakers online. Waterkloof Wines in Somerset West near Cape Town organise regular interviews and tastings with their winemaker Nadia Barnard-Langenegge and their farm manager Christiaan Loots. A fascinating winery using biodiversity and biodynamic farming. Amazing insights in to how this works. Tune in live or watch again. Many of their wines can be ordered from Woodwinters if you want to taste along with them! https://www.facebook.com/Waterkloof/

Lockdown ideas #4 - online wine events. Lots of things happening online - virtual tastings, fascinating behind-the scenes interviews with winemakers, virtual vineyard tours and many more. I will share links as we go along. To get you started here's the link to Richard from Great Grog with short but sweet tastings videos to whet your appetite. - See link below

Wine in isolation ideas #3 - there are lots of great films out there about wine. Sideways will be top of the list for many people but also Somm, Sour Grapes, Bottleshock….many more. There are a number of websites which list great wine related films and programmes on wine. The in message below may take you to a Decanter article on this subject but may required subscription. For memories of great food and wine in France "Rick Stein's Secret France" is on iplayer. And a little challenge - anyone guess the wine region where this photo was taken?

17/03/2020

Following the government announcement yesterday, it was decided with regret at the IWAS committee meeting on Monday evening that the March meeting should be cancelled. It is likely that the April meeting will also be cancelled, although at present this is not confirmed. We will of course keep you updated about future events.

Depending on the virus situation, the committee are considering adding extra tastings in July and August this year, but no further details can be given at this stage as we have no idea how events will unfold.

In the meantime enjoy some wine at home and we'll relish the tastings later in the year.

IWAS Mon 24th Feb meeting is now on the theme of Food and Wine matching - see "Events" page for more details.

Unfortunately the Riedel glasses tasting had to be cancelled by De Burgh wine merchants. Instead we are having a Food and Wine matching evening. Booking for this event has already closed but if you require further information about this event or future tastings please contact this page.

30/01/2020

Next tasting Mon 24th Feb. This is going to be a very special wine tasting event looking at the impact of wine glass shapes on the taste of wine. Tarquin de Burgh from de Burgh Wines will be leading us through a discovery of Riedel glassware. Format will be slightly different from our usual tastings. Members - please note this has to be booked at least a week in advance. More details will follow and look out for your email from our secretary. Non members - please contact this page for more details.

Our Story

Our regular meetings are held on the last Monday of each month from September to May, at the Craigmonie Hotel, starting at 7.30pm. The tastings are led by speakers who have a particular knowledge of the wines. Recent themes include “Organic Wines of Central Italy”, “Wines of Burgundy”, “Napa Valley Wines” and “High Altitude Wine”. The tasting is followed by a one course meal (with some more wine, of course!). Guests are very welcome - please contact this page if you would like to come along to a meeting. Tastings are £25 for members, £20 for guests. Annual membership fee just £20.

At the AGM, I intend to propose that the present website www.iwas.org.uk is taken down. Apart from the link to this page, it is simply an image advertising one tasting - one that took place almost a year ago. It paints very poor picture of IWAS.
