A brilliant apple day at the Dervaig Community Orchard in Mull this past weekend. It started with my talk on west coast fruit growing in the stunning Kilmore church in Dervaig, followed by the apple event up at the community orchard up the road. We had a great table set up for displays and tastings, many thanks to Carol for the hard work here on labels and layout. I am extremely grateful to Catherine at and to Sandra from the Clyde Valley Orchard Cooperative for the supply of apples. Delighted to sell a number of fruit trees across Mull, and we are already fixing a date for a grafting workshop in late winter and a repeat event next year! So many folk enjoying the orchard and the apples, and so much enthusiasm for more fruit growing across the island. Delighted to hear that some of our trees were bound for Ulva too - another new island for our trees.

Hope to see a lot of you at the apple festival in Mull in a couple of weeks!

🍎 Apple Festival – Saturday 26th September! 🍏

A little reminder that our Apple Festival is coming up later this month!

We’ll be joined by Phil Knott of Drumfearn Trees who’ll be giving a talk at 11:30am at Kilmore Church covering apple varieties, rootstocks, pollination and plenty of useful advice for anyone growing or thinking about growing apple trees.

Afterwards, we’ll head over to Dervaig Community Orchard for:
🍏 Apple tree sales
🍎 Tastings
🌳 Orchard tours
đź’¬ Growing advice
🥣 Soup & cake lunch, with donations going to Dervaig Community Orchard

There’ll be some really interesting varieties available too, including rarely available Irish and Scandinavian apples. We’ll share the full list of trees available nearer the time so you can reserve any favourites in advance.

If you’re planning to come along, please let us know if you can - it’ll really help us get an idea of numbers for catering! 🍎🌳

A RARE, RARE, RARE-VARIETY FRUIT TREE OPPORTUNITY
Phil Knott at Drumfearn Trees on Skye rears a fantastic range of rare-variety fruit trees –
EATING, COOKING AND C***R APPLES, PEARS, PLUMS, QUINCES AND MEDLARS.
They’re grown outdoors, hardened to local climate, without artificial chemicals, pesticides or fungicides, fertilized only with home-made compost teas and locally-collected seaweed. His 1 yr old whips are ready to plant out, varying from 80-160cm high, depending on variety, rootstock and graft.
HIS CURRENT FRUIT TREE CATALOGUE LISTS AN AMAZING 78 VARIETIES.
Some are just one-off so it’s very much first-come-first-served. They’re too vulnerable to dispatch by post or carrier, so it’s not possible to order online…
… BUT GREAT NEWS… Phil will be at our local Community Apple Day, so place your tree order in advance direct with him by phone or email and ask him to bring it to Kilmallie Community Centre on Saturday 20th September, for you to collect between 12 and 4pm.
If you can’t manage that place/day/time, email [email protected] BEFORE ORDERING as you may be able to collect on another day from Food Lochaber at An Drochaid instead. It’s never been easier to get our local hands on these wonderful rare fruit tree varieties.

Our fruit tree inventory is now live on the Drumfearn Trees website, with over 450 hand-grafted and croft grown fruit trees online, of over 100 different varieties!

There are too many to highlight - but we do have a good range of Plums, Pears, Quince and Medlar on top of the scores of apple varieties.

It is a first come first served basis and I will be updating the website once a day with the latest stocktake. Visits to the nursery are strictly by appointment.

Looking like a good year for Pears here on the croft. Pears take their sweet time, “pears for your heirs” as they say but they seem to be very disease free. With their upright nature, they are susceptible to high exposure, so we have tucked ours in a bit. They need very little pruning and care. Hoping for a sunny next month to really sweeten and swell the fruit!

The bright spring weather has been great for the grafted fruit trees with excellent take rates and onward growth. We start all of our trees under cover while they heal, and then harden them off and get them outside as soon as possible, with the first Pears now outside. Hessle and Onward Pear are looking excellent this year, with our first ever Shinseiki Asian Pears very happy too! Night time temperatures down to 1c this week and bursts of hail are of concern though for new growth, we will take the damp and overcast forecast as it stands!
