Bulling groups sorted over the last couple of days, a bit of planning, and hope with who goes to who - and we'll not know for about 18 months if it's right or not!
Invictus 1 AC/DC is getting this bunch, three young home-bred bulls a batch each, with the Angus tidying up 30-ish for Baldie production!
Role on Spring 2027!!

Cattle are feeling the heat a bit, and none more than the calves. Low activity and a nap are definitely the order of the day!

It's looking like it'll break tomorrow with some rain (to follow last night's 2mm), which will be super for some new grass and arable silage sown recently and struggling a bit.

Young bulls having breakfast this morning. 3 of these will be heading off to new homes in the next week or so, we might use a couple ourselves on some heifers and run the rest on.

If you have a breakdown, or failed semen test then these lads were tested last week and are eager to go! We've good transport connections around the UK for moving stock - with a wagon heading South next week down west coast, and one up the east towards Aberdeen we can help quickly!

Pigment - yes or no?!

It's a pleasure to see this heifer every morning. A year old tomorrow and ~500kg (1100lbs), she'll be heading to the bull at the end of the month.

But what about her eye pigment? Personally, we find it aesthetically pleasing, and while it could be seen as unnecessary in the UK, we appreciate it has a greater significance overseas so encourage it where we can - but feel not everyone in the UK is as keen as us!😉🤣

A chance encounter with a couple of Otter kits while moving the breakfast fence for the bulls this morning.
Thinking they'll have been kicked out by their mother to make way for a new litter possibly!?🤷‍♂️ If any one knows about Otters please let us know🤣🙈

A few of the 12 month old heifers enjoying just over 5mm of rain since midnight to flush some dust from their coats!

Amazing to think in Scotland we're looking for rain, but it's becoming a theme in recent springs.

We've about 20 heifers to serve this spring to give us some flexibility to keep tightening our calving period after moving from an autumn and spring calving, to just spring.

What a great spell of weather for stock at the moment☀️☀️ Sure they're as happy with it as we are.

Took a moment to grab some quick snaps of our young 11/12 month old bulls tonight as they enjoyed another break of ryegrass.

They're well ahead of last years crop following a better summer in 2025 than what was called summer in 2024! We could do with a wee shower of rain but we'll enjoy the warmth in the meantime😎😁

Rowdy young lads!

Our spring bulls from 2025 nearly ready for grass and work. Ranging from 8 to 11 months, and destined for various routes, we'll hopefully have them muscle scanned when the youngest is 300 days old and before any leave.

Our first-ever 'Black Baldie' calf!

As part of Monitor Farms Scotland for the last few years, we have been challenged to make a few changes. One of these was to consider a different breed for a proportion of the female herd to widen marketing opportunities.

So, with a move to one calving period, and a consideration that we didn't need more than 100 pure calves, we opted for all above that to be bred commercially. Females selected were those with less desirable traits for pedigree breeding (this girl's tail head!).

It'll be interesting to see how it goes!

When you've overindulged just that wee bit too much and fall asleep at the bar....
