What a day for October!

One batch of cows moving closer to home for scanning tomorrow😬. Always a nerve-racking day, especially with changes and tightening to the calving period over last 18 months.
We've also used three homebred bulls at 12/13months - but their groups look fairly settled so 🤞 there!

Again been odd with no Autumn calving, but we're looking forward to having less management groups over winter for the first time ever, and overall summer management has been easier - also had a good Autumn holiday😉🤣

Morning shift for these in-calf heifers today, rewarding to see the swallows taking advantage of insect disturbance from hooves!

Like the majority of the UK we've had it very dry this year, but this field always stays fairly green being close to the water table if you're feeling envious🤣😆 and an inch of rain helped last week too🫣😉

*Warning* A bit of a long watch... like 6 minutes🤣🙈

One group of spring calvers moving to a 'fresh' field. Only 85mm of rain since mid May (compared with 196mm same period last year) has resulted in non existent grass growth - but it doesn't seem to be bothering these girls too much!

*Herd Visit - 11th July - 2pm*

We're looking forward to welcoming fellow Scottish Hereford Breeders Association members for a visit on 11th July. If anyone would like to tag along for a tour please give them, or us, a shout.

There will be hospitality from Wilson's Farm and Kitchen after (for a minimum charge!😉). Numbers essential for this.

A move for one of our bulling groups today.

We've been trying to learn, and move more to a rotational grazing-type setup. We're not quite there, but are encouraged by little improvements we're making. Water issues owing to hot weather have scuppered plans in a couple of fields, but we'll try to learn about mitigating that.

Bulling groups sorted over the last couple of days, a bit of planning, and hope with who goes to who - and we'll not know for about 18 months if it's right or not!
Invictus 1 AC/DC is getting this bunch, three young home-bred bulls a batch each, with the Angus tidying up 30-ish for Baldie production!
Role on Spring 2027!!

Cattle are feeling the heat a bit, and none more than the calves. Low activity and a nap are definitely the order of the day!

It's looking like it'll break tomorrow with some rain (to follow last night's 2mm), which will be super for some new grass and arable silage sown recently and struggling a bit.

Young bulls having breakfast this morning. 3 of these will be heading off to new homes in the next week or so, we might use a couple ourselves on some heifers and run the rest on.

If you have a breakdown, or failed semen test then these lads were tested last week and are eager to go! We've good transport connections around the UK for moving stock - with a wagon heading South next week down west coast, and one up the east towards Aberdeen we can help quickly!

Pigment - yes or no?!

It's a pleasure to see this heifer every morning. A year old tomorrow and ~500kg (1100lbs), she'll be heading to the bull at the end of the month.

But what about her eye pigment? Personally, we find it aesthetically pleasing, and while it could be seen as unnecessary in the UK, we appreciate it has a greater significance overseas so encourage it where we can - but feel not everyone in the UK is as keen as us!😉🤣
