It was great to meet with traders from Kilrea earlier today to talk about the bridge and the impact the recent closure has had.

It’s clear just how difficult this has been for local businesses. Many spoke about reduced footfall, disruption to deliveries, and the uncertainty of not knowing if or when this could happen again.

We also talked at length about the need for a new bridge, which was the main focus of the discussion. There is a strong feeling locally that a long-term solution is needed, particularly given the current bridge was never designed for the level or type of traffic it now carries.

There is also real frustration that no support was provided during the closure, despite the very obvious impact on trade.

I’m grateful to everyone who came along and shared their experiences. I’ll be writing to the Infrastructure Minister to ask for a meeting with local traders so they can speak directly about the need for a new bridge in Kilrea.

We continue to lobby for a much-needed new bridge in Kilrea.

On Friday we met with Jon Burrows MLA, UUP Party Leader, Richard Holmes, Bann DEA, and Glen Miller Ulster Unionist spokesperson.

The room was filled with local businesses representing a wide range of sectors - retail, health, agriculture, manufacturing, and hospitality.

We had an extremely supportive meeting with the UUP Leader, who assured us that he is 100% behind the need for Stormont and the Department for Infrastructure to deliver a new, modern bridge over the Bann River in Kilrea.
