We have to be careful with the word ‘sustainable’ these days as it’s often subjective and misused.

For us, regenerative farming processes and food miles are high on our sustainability criteria. Cereals, potatoes and pulses are well suited to the UK climate and often have a short journey from farm to plate.

Avocados are rich in nutrition, containing high levels of vitamin E, folate & monounsaturated fats making them a great replacement for meat.

However….

Avocado farming requires significant irrigation and has lead to large amounts deforestation to cater for unsustainable production in countries such as Mexico and Peru. With this, the fruit is primarily shipped across to the UK from South and Central America, leaving a significant carbon footprint and requiring huge amounts of packaging to for preservation.

What are your thoughts on bananas?

Bananas are widely considered a superfood and are a great source of potassium and vitamins.

However, some nutritionists suggest there a number flaws associated with the fruit, such as high sugar and carb content, with apples and pears being cited as better alternatives.

The majority of bananas are shipped to the UK from Latin America, which may suggest that there are better, more locally sourced alternatives, that aren’t shipped across the Atlantic Ocean.

Some bananas are sourced through Fairtrade, offering a minimum price to farmers, however a large proportion are not.

Whatever your view, we feel that there isn’t enough information readily available for the majority of banana consumers in the UK there isn’t enough information for us to make purchasing decision. Similar scenarios apply to thousands more groceries sold each day in the UK.

We want to stimulate change through transparency.

What influences your food decision making the most?

We believe there are several factors that we should consider when choosing what to eat. Price and perceived quality have loud voices, but where your food has come from often isn’t clear enough. We need to provide more clarity on how and where our food has been produced whilst also clearly highlighting the nutritional benefits in a concise manner.

…therefore 46% of produce is racking up significant food miles.

Freight imported via train, plane, ships & lorries all cause cabin emissions which continue to damage our planet.

Introducing Seed & Sway

This new project will look to improve awareness of systemic food processes that are harming our planet. We’ll look to provide better visibility of production to consumer governance to better inform purchasing decisions.

Our mission starts here, we want to make sure that everyone is aware of the journey that their food has been on to arrive to arrive at their plate.

We will be banging the drum to push for more sustainable farming practices, minimal carbon footprint, zero plastic packaging alongside highlighting the health benefits of certain food groups.

Wish us luck!
