My daughter’s been on a forest school camp this week and each morning on our walk across the common we’ve passed this patch of wild carrot flowers, just waiting to spring open. It’s amazing to look closely and see the individual umbels already formed, curled so intricately. Maybe tomorrow will be the day…

Our microbakery will be taking a break over the next few weeks, as we enjoy some family time. We will be back, looking forward to your orders, in September!

(We’ll still be baking for the Barnes food bank when we can. 💪)

Wow Barnes Fair, you all but cleared us out of jam and savoury preserves! Thank you so much for all your purchases. What a good job there are still plenty of garden gluts to come this summer, so we can refill our shelves soon. 😄

Massive thanks too to our friends at who braved the heat today on the church stall.

Are you heading to Barnes Fair today? If so, you can stock up on our preserves at the stall! They’ll be on the corner of Barnes Green, near Gail’s.

There is new season jam, as well as all our savoury favourites too. Having a barbecue this weekend? Then why not give our Piccalilli or Tomato Relish a go?

As usual, all the income goes to support our work providing fresh food, including bread, to the Barnes foodbank at and running community growing spaces.

In all that we do, we aim to increase biodiversity, address climate change and make a difference to nature. This cuts across our work in both the garden and the kitchen too, where we try to make choices that are good for the planet, such as sourcing flour from a mill as close to London as feasible (shout out to ).

Why bees? Well, quite simply, approximately 35% of global food production depends on bees for pollination, including many staple crops like apples, almonds, and coffee. Bees also play an important role in pollinating wild plants and trees, providing food and shelter for other animals, insects, and birds. Without them, the world would definitely be a poorer place.

What can you do? is a good place to start. They have lots of information about bees as well as suggestions for ways to encourage pollinators in your green spaces.

At this time of year, our garden is full of these little frothy blobs, known as spittlebugs or ‘cuckoo spit’, as they appear in spring at a time when the familiar call of cuckoos can be heard. Whilst I was watering this evening, I noticed one was looking a bit different… and it appeared to be moving… a video of what happened is in the comments!

Each of these blobs contains a creamy white insect nymph of sap-sucking bugs known as froghoppers. Adult froghoppers are present during mid-late summer and deposit overwintering eggs in plant stems during late summer. It is the immature stages, called nymphs, which hatch in spring, that secrete the white froth.

According to the RHS, apart from producing the 'spit,' froghoppers have little detrimental effect on plants and they are part of the biodiversity that healthy gardens support. I took that as a good sign and left this chap to it, after welcoming him into the world.

We had a busy morning at Mary Mag’s last week. Seeds in the raised bed are flourishing and - all being well - we should have lettuce, radish, chard and herbs to contribute to our class-grown lunch later in the term. We’re grateful for a Climate Action grant from which has made this possible!

As well as veg seeds, we planted some flowers as well before Easter, including nasturtiums and cosmos. We hope these will encourage all-important pollinators to the garden, but they will also add a splash of colour.

The wellies were also an important lesson for the children on not just throwing away things that are no longer fit for purpose, but thinking carefully about how they might be re-used.

With the weather warming up, our minds are turning to long, lazy al fresco lunches. Our savoury preserves are the perfect accompaniment to cheese, cold meats, pork pies and perhaps a glass or two of something chilled.

We have chutneys made with a range of different ingredients; a gently spiced tomato relish; and our hugely popular piccalilli - a traditional mustard pickle, packed with crunchy veg. Our preserves are all made in small batches, using organic produce from our growing spaces. Normally £4.50 per jar, all our savoury preserves are currently £4.00 each or £7.00 for two.

See the post pinned to the top of our grid for a full list of what’s available and how to order.

As ever, if you return our jars, we sterilise them, pop new lids on and use them again. You’ll also get 30p off your next purchase with us.
