Happy Monday! How has your weekend been?
Fortunate to come across this exciting exhibition "Momentum of Light" by Iwan Baan and recent Pritzker Award winner Francis Kere at Heal's Building, Tottenham Court Road. Showcasing the captured photographs of "vernacular architecture and everyday life in the West African nation of Burkina Faso", this event was presented as part of the AA residency. In this intimate space with a rather dark setting, the presence of natural light in the photographs is amplified and amazed to see how it bounces in the interior of ordinary household settings.

Weekend exhibitions (2/2)
“The series is part of Aureli’s ongoing enquiry into elements of ‘non-compositional’ architecture, beginning with The Marriage of Reason and Squalor, a set of 50 cm x 50 cm ink drawings made between 2001 and 2014.... And yet within these drawings it is possible to find a subtle transition from a semantic reading of spatial elements to a semiotic one; a perpetual dialogue between recording and projection, between truth and beauty. Similar to Aureli’s other series, Synthesis and Destruction continues a personal project. They are chapters of an unfinished repertoire. A project that dismisses the traditional rules of design, predictability, individualism, and composition instead presents figurative fragments of a non-figurative architecture... Aureli’s ‘Doorways’ and ‘Walls’ points at no cryptic, symbolic, or allegorical values; they are intrinsically polemic and projective. Just like any contemplative act, his drawings make a commitment to architecture, one that follows a liturgical practice.” - Hamed Khosravi, 2021
Intricate ink drawings by Pier Vittorio Aureli calls for the details to be observed in both smaller and larger view: when the weavings of line become shadows. With humble black and white drawings, it expressed a contemplative sense to look at the ordinary building elements such as door, walkway, and wall. The idea of looking closely into the "world is rendered as a series of architectonic fragments suspended between synthesis and destruction" and its relation to Piranesi's methodology are particularly inspiring.

Weekend exhibitions (1/2)

The exhibition ‘A New Nature’’ exhibits mainly the sculptural artworks by American Japanese artist. Perhaps most visitors can still recall their memories of his works at a bigger exhibition in Barbican Centre. Still, comparably White Cube Bermondsey by Casper Mueller Kneer offers a much more intimate exhibition space, with some spacious rooms for large-scale installations.
With the patterns and design principles that are organic and non-symmetrical, the exhibition is titled rightly to celebrate the beauty of perfection in non-linear and curves. When architects speak about nature, what is nature? What definites the implementation of nature?

Bickenhall Mansions: "Red brick mansion flats with gables built in 1869 by W.H.Scrymgeour. Once the home of the British Special Operations Executive, an arm of the intelligence services during World War II, originally based in Baker Street. Distinctive architectural features of door entrances framed by an arch of ornate stonework." - London Picture Archive.
Lived in Wall: We are particularly fascinated by the thick wall, and it reminds us of Louis Kahn's sketches of the British castle on the interplay of servant-served, positive-negative, solid-void spaces. Looking forward to seeing how this is to be unfolded for our client with a small family.

A few highlights of the exhibition on waste at @designmuseum
An organic 3D printed green wall, several alternative construction and furniture products that will be available soon. An amazing video with @lacatonvassal explaining how we can often avoid demolition, which they see an act of violence.
More importantly, the exhibition describes the past and possible future steps towards zero waste and a happier future.

Helene Binet's architectural photography exhibition at RA.
Glad to visit the event before it ended a few days ago. Probably most can recognise Helene's captured works of Therme Vals and Bruder Klaus Field Chapel by Peter Zumthor, but her documentations of some buildings during the construction phase was also included like glimpses of behind-the-scene. Not limited to contemporary architecture, the exhibition showcased some retrospective views of looking at the ancient or old buildings, including the ones in India and China.
Apart from celebrating the geometry, light-shadow, volume and dimension in the creation of modern buildings, the photograph series of Classical Gardens of SuZhou is an interesting one while displaying a sense of discovery as if a time travel of experiencing a place.

They will be working on and leading two high-end residential architectural projects. At the same time,they will prepare competition entries and design concepts for new projects.

Don't you just love the serenity of this space by unagru ?
This project was shortlisted for this year's Build It magazine awards. The scheme has extending the original dwelling into the basement, side, rear and roof of the property, at each junction they've taken the opportunity to add glass, reconnecting the original house with daylight.

You may be wondering, why would you call a project "The Sponge"?
Honestly, a fair question. And don't worry, we have the answer - and it's quite simple. The two storey home features a number of skylights throughout, giving the space the look and feel of a sponge (not texturally, of course). This allows for an abundance of natural light to fill the space, and helps create a strong connection between the indoors and out.
Oh, and while you're here, would you check out that staircase? And yep, that's a fully functional tropical fish tank underneath! 🐠
