Next up in our guide to eating out in Stoke Newington: the newest brunch spot on the block. Johnny Boy’s prides itself on being the antithesis of small plates, going all in on big portions of Americana instead. No dainty three-bite numbers here, just proper platefuls done properly.

It was in here we discovered that French bistro food doesn’t have to be heavy, and is actually the perfect vibe for a heatwave.

Like French onion soup in the winter? Let me introduce you to pissalade for the summer. And what do you mean you’ve never tried mackerel and melon salad? Obviously still get the Époisses béchamel Gougères, they transcend seasonality.

The new branch of The Lady of the Grapes opened in London Bridge last month, and whilst it’s impressive wine cellar from all female producers is reason enough for a visit, we implore you to wait until you’ve tried their desserts before you decide your favourite thing about the place. Likely there will be lots.

Lunch at Pied a Terre in Charlotte Street, Fitzrovia. Opened 1991, so 35 years old — London’s longest serving Michelin star restaurant.

Rain interrupted the unveiling of an outdoor dining terrace this week, but who cares when the interiors and the food are so good: Cornish lemon sole with whate asparagus; French quail with confit leg tartlet Bordelaise; brownie with chocolate Namelaka and salted caramel.

Nathan has been a firm favourite of our diners for years so we were very excited to make the voyage to Port Isaac and meet the man himself, as well as the rest of the incredible Band of Outlaws.

A hot newcomer this week was .pasta latest opening in the City.

Service and food were superb. The classics — fried artichoke and silk handkerchiefs — were as good as ever, while dishes unique to this branch included a tuna tartare with fried pasta and rare beef. A carbonara raviolo had sold out on our visit, but it sounded good enough to tempt us back.

An excellently located spot for a working lunch, with a fantastic atmosphere to match. We can’t wait to see what our diners think of it in the 2027 survey.

About last night: Gill to Tail at Dinings SW3.

A 10-course guest chef night with Masaki and Louise from Boubou’s, cooking sustainable seafood that uses every part of the fish.
Cod tongue, monkfish liver, dashi from shells and bones, a ‘tea’ of fins in warm sake. The hand-dived Cornish scallop is, by Masaki’s reckoning, sweeter than Scottish and almost as good as Japanese.
Louise opened Boubou’s Lisbon at 23, spent eight years there, and has just left to explore what’s next.

Simpson’s in the Strand has reopened under Jeremy King. London’s grand dame of dining retains its Edwardian opulence, now gently refreshed for a new chapter.
