Hello everyone! We hope you enjoyed the talk with Sitopia farm last Thursday!🌿✨

Here are some resources covering a couple of the topics Chloe talked about.
⚠️⚠️But before we get into that, make sure to go support the Sitopia farm project! https://www.spacehive.com/sitopiafarm

🌱Experiencing nature: WWOOFing (WorldWide Opportunities on Organic Farms). As a form of homestay tourism, you can work on a farm in exchange for free board. It's a great way to travel on a budget, experience farming practices first hand and make strong social and cultural exchanges. Definitely something to look into for the summer! https://wwoof.net/

📚Book recommendations:
- Sitopia: How Food Can Save the World by Carolyn Steel (one of the board members of Sitopia farm!)
It explores the idea, first developed in Hungry City, that food shapes our lives, and asks what we can do with this knowledge in order to lead better ones. In essence, it is a practical, food-based philosophy. https://www.carolynsteel.com/sitopiabook

- Miraculous Abundance: One Quarter Acre, Two French Farmers, and Enough Food to Feed the World by Charles and Perrine Hervé-Gruyer
This book is the eloquent tale of a couple’s evolution from creating a farm to sustain their family to delving into an experiment in how to grow the most food possible, in the most ecological way possible, and create a farm model that can carry us into a post-carbon future—when oil is no longer moving goods and services, energy is scarcer, and localization is a must. https://www.chelseagreen.com/product/miraculous-abundance/

Hello everyone!

We hope all is well! Sorry for not keeping you up to date for so long. Before lockdown, Bentham's farmers managed to meet up every week! 👩‍🌾🧑‍🌾

- We introduced newcomers (the majority of members) to the farm
- We did a LOT of weeding and prepping the farm for the warmer season. 🌿
- We also harvested a couple of raspberries, potatoes, chard and kale leaves, lamb's lettuce.
- We sowed some spinach, planted tullip bulbs for Spring and transferred tomato plants to the green house hoping they will redden a little more before it gets too cold.🌷

Until next time! ✨

Hey guys ! 🌱🌱

We hope you are all well and safe. As you may or may not know, Bentham's farm has become a society this past year to receive funding for new tools, equipment and growing projects. However, we're very casual about people coming along to the farm so everyone's always welcome (membership is free!). Being a society doesn't change much from previous years. We'll be organizing a couple of events and projects throughout the year so do keep an eye out for them!🐌👀

If you'd like to take part in the farm, DM us and we'll add you to our group chat.
Follow us on instagram @uclbenthamsfarmers to get more info!

--🌱🌱--

Hi everyone ! We hope you are all safe and feeling good despite these times. A couple of us have been able to go to the farm and keep it alive. Here's what been happening.

- 🍅🍅The tomatoes have been transplanted into the greenhouse, where the lettuce used to be. We've since harvested the heads of lettuce that hadn't been devoured by the snails. We made the mistake of mushing the tomato plants too close together last year. They’ve got lots of space apart now - though some weeding is necessary.

- 🥔We found a happy potato in the compost !

- We've been experimenting with seeds and most of them have successfully germinated ! This includes carrots🥕, brussel sprouts, pumpkins and courgettes🥒 ! All of this is very exciting.

- 🐸We've seen two frogs hopping around the pond. However, the eutrophication is becoming untenable. We've tried adding water to dilute it, and cleared leaf litter from the surface each week, but it still appears to be getting progressively worse🥺. Tips and tricks that you think could salvage our pond are immensely welcome !

Have a lovely week,

🌿The Bentham's Farm team🌿

Hi everyone! We hope you are all safe and well during these times of hardship.

Unfortunately, none of us have been have been able to go to the farm these past few weeks to tend for the plants. We're sad that we can't see the farm at the most beautiful time of the year.😔 HOWEVER, a kind and willing Max Rayne resident, Madeline, has been taking care of our babies every day! *Round of applause for her* We cannot thank her enough!🥰

Things have been looking very good at the farm, our hard work finally peeking through.

[see photos attached]

- The lettuce in the greenhouse is big and luscious, and the cauliflower is really powering through!.
- The broad beans as well!
- The raspberry plants are shooting up fast, and will most definitely give us some fruits in September, to properly welcome any new farmers that want to join!
- The garlic planted in the newly renovated bed is popping its head out.
- And our frog eggs are looking healthy! There are a lot now, but the number will reduce as they will feed the biome around the farm. Hopefully, we'll have a couple hopping around soon!🐸

We are currently working on a new logo and visual identity for the farm, and looking to put ourselves out there! Even though the farm doesn't require tons of people looking after it, a lot of the team is leaving next year so we want to build the community! As we are now an official UCL society (oulala fancy), we'll probably be at the 2020 Freshers fair, but let us confirm that when we get closer to the date. Do talk about the farm to people around you!👩‍🌾👨‍🌾

As always, have a lovely week and stay safe and healthy!🌟

--🌱🌱--

Hello everyone! Here's what we did today (15.03.20)

- We did the usual watering + transferring food waste from the ready compost bin to the active one, as people often get confused as to where to put their waste.

- We discovered hundreds of frog eggs in the pond!🐸
- Saw the first hints of our garlics poking their heads through.
- We transplanted some rescued basil into the herb garden.
- Transplanted some rescued mint - into a container so it doesn’t take over a bed.
- Planted a strawberry runner.🍓🍓
- Found a luscious greenhouse waiting for us: some happy looking cauliflower, dino-sized lettuces and broad beans, loads of bell pepper sprouts...🌿🌿
- The raspberry canes we had cut a few weeks are starting to shoot up!
- We planted six shade tolerant plants near the pond that are expected to grow to 45-100 cm wide each. We can’t wait till they fill up the space. (Four of them in the photo)

So yeah, a pretty busy and productive morning.

Until next week! [stay safe and wash your hands!]🌟💦

Hello everyone ! Hope you all had a nice week and have been making the most of the sunny weather. We certainly can feel Spring arriving !

Here's what we did Yesterday (7/03/20)

- We did the usual routine: watered the greenhouse and transferred unwanted food from the ready compost to the active one. Some of our experiments in the greenhouse have succeeded, such as the cauliflower, the mint, broad beans and lettuce. Some, not so much. The elementary school-style pea growing technique has made them rot, and the rocket just didn't germinate.🌿🌿

- We also dug up some mini ponds as advised by our pond expert. They are very small now, but this will hopefully attract some wildlife. We are hoping to put some extra plants in the main pond in the near future as well.🤞

- Lastly, we went to the Camden Garden Center and got some extra things to plant around the pond as it is looking quite bare at the moment !🌷🌷

Anyways, have a lovely end of weekend and a great week !

Hi everyone ! Here's what we did on Saturday (15/02/19)

- We weeded the greenhouse to let the lettuce and broad beans breathe !🌿
- Cleared the leaves from the pond🍂🍂
- Padded the pond with soil in preparation for introducing some plants to grow around it as was suggested by Carl at our pond event !
- Set some peas to germinate in a damp cloth, primary school science experiment style🙃

See you soon with more updates, and have lovely (reading) week !

A lil' recap of Saturday 8th of Feb's work :))

1. We cut back the raspberries plants in order for them to grow back nicely. Then had to cut each stem into super small pieces so we could compost them.

2. We planted Pak Choi, Peas, Bell Peppers and Cauliflower in the greenhouse.🌶🥬 Let's hope they germinate ! The lettuce we planted in the bed 2 weeks ago is looking really good. Unfortunately, the rocket doesn't seem to have caught on.

3. We weeded around the broad beans, which are looking pretty good ! They are also reinserting nitrogen to the soil, which we think has been lacking. Making it more fertile for our next adventures !

4. We found and ‘relocated’ a snail den and plugged some holes in the greenhouse.🐌🐌

5. And of course, watered everything and sorted out the compost !

💦PS: Don't forget to join us at our Pond Rescue event Tuesday ! :)) https://www.facebook.com/events/208114986981697/

Have a lovely week 🌟🌟

--🌱🌱--

Hi guys ! We're happy to say that term 2 has nicely started for the Bentham's farm community !

We got approved as a society, aka Urban farmers, which will enable us to receive more funding and revamp this place !🌟🌟

Sat 25th of Jan 2020:
- We were welcomed by a very green greenhouse, with lots of weeds, but also some promising things ! The lettuce has been growing nicely, so we transfered those from there pots to the bed.🌱
- The usual: watering and sifting through compost
- Mae re-organized and cleaned up the shed nicely, for future hang-outs !💪
- We got new plant beds ! So we leveled the soil, sprinkled some compost and seeds to make it more fertile. The seeds and future random weeds will prevent the soil to be bare and suffer the weather until we plant something there.✨

Hope you guys have a lovely week !😊😊

Sat 7th of Dec 2019 !

08/12/2019

--🌱🌱--
Hey everyone ! Here is what we did Saturday (7th of Dec) !
We mostly worked on the maintenance of the farm.
- We watered the freshly-sowed greens in the greenhouse
- Some of us poked some drainages holes in the bins in order to drain the rainwater that had built up, and to plant future shrubs or trees in them in the future ! + took some satisfying videos of the process
- We sifted through the compost and got some nice soil that we stored for future use. We found some slugg eggs in there as well !
- We had fresh oregano tea and ate some Bentham's biscuits
- We sat down and did some planning for next week & the year

More adventures coming next week !😊😊

Hi everyone ! Here is a little report of what happened Saturday (23/11/19). Enjoy ! 🌿🌿

- We started by watering the freshly seeded plants in the greenhouse.
- Some of us cleaned up one of the beds by weeding the ivy and most of the blackberry plants.
- We turned the compost around to let the air seep in and filtered it very thoroughly.
- We cleaned up the pond by raking some unwanted fallen Ieaves (see photos !)
- We planted some new seeds in the bed behind the raspberry bushes.
- We harvested some beetroots
- And most importantly, we resurrected the infamous "Bentham's cookies" cookie jar and ate loads 🙃

🌿 Good morning everyone ! 🌿Hope you all had a wonderful weekend and are ready to start a fresh new week !

In order to share and enhance the visibility of our little community, we have decided to work on our social media identity and presence. This means you will be seeing more of us (yay) ! 2 post will be posted every week, annotated with different symbols.
- 🌱: During the weekend - A little recap of Saturday's session to keep everyone up to date !
- 🌻: During the week - Anything plant/farm/environment/wellbeing related. Upcoming events in London or UCL, interesting articles that are worth giving a read, Saturday farming schedule...

Hope to see you all engaged and interested in this initiative ! 🙃🙃

Sat the 16th of November:

We started by doing weekly habitual tasks: mixing the compost, watering beans in the greenhouse and sweeping up fallen leaves on the ground and in the pond.

We then collected the tomatoes in the greenhouse, as the weather is getting too cold for them to fully ripen. Good ways to incorporate them in food is just to let them sit out for a little while and fry them up in the pan with a couple of spices !
After that, we uprooted the tomato plants to make some space on the bed and use it for other purposes. We mixed the soil with some of our compost, watered it thouroughly, and sowed rows of broadbeans. On the side, we planted rocket, cauliflower and rocket in inidividual sowing pots.

At the same time, some of us were weeding and cleaning up the bed outside of the greenhouse to plant some other things there (ie. the last of the broadbeans).

To finish off the morning, we tididied somes trees to clear the path from the shed to the greenhouse.

An overall very productive morning !
:)

Hello, my name is Ian, I'm a student at UCL and a consultant at the student-led, non-profit organisation, London Strategic Consulting. My team and I are conducting research for a social impact company, which has the mission of offsetting carbon. I reached out to this group as I understand your community is packed with individuals concerned about the environment, who want to become more sustainable and combat climate change. We are looking for individuals who are currently studying or living or working in the UK to complete a quick survey consisting of questions regarding your lifestyle and relationship with the planet. Your response will be completely confidential and will help the company better understand the needs of its potential customers. The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. https://george749533.typeform.com/to/AEbuQYvH If you have any queries or further comments, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at [email protected]. Hello Urban Farmers! We are 2 MA Students from Royal College of Art working on our final project exploring 'Food systems in Urban planning' and we are also urban gardeners. On a normal day we'd be out chatting with other urban farmers or potential ones to understand their journey into growing but since we are unable to do so at the moment, we urge people on this group to help us with filling a short survey! More information about our work is on the survey and we hope you have fun filling it! P.S: This is not an advertisement or in anyway a paid project. It's 2 students finding ways to scale the impact of urban farming/gardening movement in the UK. Any feedback or questions are welcome. Cheers! Link to survey -
