Asparagus Death Cult.
Agave are often misidentified as a type of cactus. They are, in fact, a succulent, belonging to the Asparagaceae Family, making them a close biological relative of Asparagus.
This seems like an unlikelyย relationship, until you see the agave's flowing stem, known as a quiote. The quiote bursts from the centre of the plant at full maturity, producing flowers, seeds, and dispersible clones, after which the plant promptly dies.
In order to keep the plant alive until harvest, the quiote can be severed. From the stump of the quiote, the plant can grow clones, or sometimes a number of tiny quiotes, looking very much like spears of Asparagus.
