at for their signature STEAK AND CHIPS at what was their last day and streetfood traders in their current format.
Twas a sad day…even sadder than Maguire not making the England squad. Yea that sad.
I first met Alex over 10 years ago when he democratised the Steak and Chips, serving quality British Bavette steak, cooked over coal on a , on top of freshly fried triple-cooked chips, which ranked as some of the best anywhere, with homemade sauces that could’ve been a highlight on their own.
It’s pretty well documented how hard hospitality is at the moment, with operators being pressured from all angles, and Beefsteaks was not immune to this so Alex made the decision to pack it up after, impressively, paying back his COVID loan. Yes it took over 6 years to run that sucker down.
It really sucks for all of us that the places we love are disappearing and I’m sure you’ve also got your own stories. If so, please share them or feel free to give them some love in the comments.
But also, go to them and even if you don’t buy anything, just say hi and have a chat - I’m always surprised by how generous operators are with their time and how open the conversations are. It’s cathartic if nothing else.
So with that in mind, and this insane weather, if you’re looking for a STREETFOOD MARKET this weekend, while we’re at it…
and of course, my second home, .
Oh and if you want a piece of Alex is still doing private catering.
