When a flashlight grows dim or quits working, you don’t throw it away—you change the batteries.
My dad made a good point when he said that, and it stuck with me. When a person messes up or finds themselves in a dark place, you don’t cast them aside either. Of course not. You help them change their batteries.
Some people need AA batteries — attention and affection. They don’t need fixing, just presence, reassurance, and to feel seen and loved.
Some need AAA — attention, affection, and acceptance. They’re fighting battles inside, and what keeps them going is knowing they’re accepted as they are, not as who they’re expected to be.
Some need C — compassion. A little patience, understanding, and kindness can bring someone back to life more than harsh words ever could.
Some need D — direction. Not judgment, not shame, just guidance, support, and someone willing to help them find their way again.
And if, after all that, they still don’t seem to shine… don’t give up on them. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is simply sit with them quietly in the dark and share your light. Because healing doesn’t always come from fixing someone — sometimes it comes from staying.
