Very special visit to a very special producer Domaine Guiberteau who also generously showed Brendan Slater-West wines. Guiberteau is a masterclass in wine making. The contrasting vintages highlighting such diversity which split the group’s preferences. Personally, 2023 Breze was the highlight, this needs to be hidden deep in the cellar. For all its stunning balance and complexity, the potential was clearly on display… open again in 2036. Upon returning to base camp, consensus demanded opening a bottle of 2021 Bourg. Feeling (very) blessed.

Very strong start to Loire 2026 tour at Domaine des Closiers … The phenomenal attention to detail definitely delivered exceptional wines. The Coudraies 2022 rewrote in my mind how expressive Chinon could be, and the micro production of their Chardonnay floored everyone. Not to distract from the wines, but the caves were the most spectacular I have ever seen.

J brought the Soldera 2006 which eclipsed my 2000 Rich (…. Might as well brought tap water). G decides to go uber geek serving the Madeira white and Trebbiano blind (wtf dude?!) I wish I had the Trebbiano in an opaque glass, the visual of natural wine was hard to ignore despite it being nothing like overly oxidised experiences previously endured. The Macanita was a revelation, dry white from Madeira and it was phenomenal. My other entry of DD Babylon Sec was banging, such an underrated wine. But the Soldera 2006 lives rent free in my head, thank you again for showing J

Opus One 2022 Release, Not Cheap. Not a Buy.


Opus One 2022 release price at £235 a bottle is not cheap, not a buy. 2022 was not a great Napa Valley vintage, there are plenty of other superior Opus One wines offered at the same or even lower prices.

Vintages such as 2018, 2013 and 2012 are better rated wines from well recognised better vintages. They are all cheaper than 2022. Even exceptionally rated 2019 and 2016 are only marginally higher in price after factoring in storage costs.

With an “Ex-Chateau Price” of £174 and an “Ex-Negociant Price” of £191, its probable 2022 Opus One will trade below £235 in the grey market.

Grand Puy Lacoste EP 2024, 13% More Expensive Than 2020

Grand Puy Lacoste 2024 En Primeur pricing at £35.50 is expensive. It is more expensive than all vintages between 2021 and 2011, with the exception of 2016. It is 13% more expensive than 2020, unquestionably a superior vintage and better rated wine.

Even more interesting is that compared to the iconic 2009 vintage, 2024 is only 6% cheaper when storage costs are included. This is far too small of a discount, another example of not enough incentive offered to buy 2024 En Primeur.

Vieux Chateau Certan 2024 EP, Not Fair Enough

Vieux Chateau Certan 2024 En Primeur offer at £118.00 is fair, but not fair enough. The Chateau’s pricing was considerate, clearly looking closely at where similar vintages are offered in the secondary market. It is priced a couple percentage points cheaper than 2021 and almost flat to 2017.

However, 2014 is offered nearly 12% cheaper. It is a much better vintage than 2024, plus it’s a marginally better rated wine. 2024 pricing is not bad like some recent releases. This is just an instance of a better alternative offered in the secondary market.

Eglise-Clinet EP 2024, The Worst (Extended En Primeur Analysis Included)

Eglise-Clinet 2024 En Primeur is priced at £177.00 and it is the worst. What an exciting conclusion to this campaign, just when it looked like Canon pulled out all the stops to win Worst Priced 2024 En Primeur award, Eglise-Clinet roared in front. This offer has inspired a much deeper analysis. Buckle up, this note will be a long one.

2021 is 44% Cheaper
2020 is 4% Cheaper
2019 is nearly 8% Cheaper
2017 is 39% Cheaper
2016 is 1% Cheaper
2014 is 54% Cheaper!!!!!
2009 is 1% More Expensive
2008 is 58% Cheaper !!!!

Almost all of these wines, on aggregate, are better rated than 2024. Without question, 2020, 2019, 2016, 2014, 2009 and 2008 were superior Bordeaux vintages than 2024. To price this En Primeur more expensive than 2016 is unconscionable (personal note: tried this vintage recently and it was sublime!). To price this En Primeur only 1% lower than 2009 is insanity.

When vintages like 2014 and 2008 are over 50% cheaper than 2024, something is very wrong with this En Primeur offer. Do not get swayed by “new wine maker, much better wine making, blah blah blah” sales speech. Or even worse, do not fall for the “low yield” scarcity justification for these prices. That is just reinforcing what a bad vintage 2024 actually was. The reality is that these wines were rated and re-rated by wine critics. The same critics also rated 2024. While no one will claim a critic is perfect, making an aggregate comparative analysis yields extremely useful conclusions. Folks, this is not rocket science. (See BIO for full analysis).
