Opus One 2022 Release, Not Cheap. Not a Buy.

Opus One 2022 release price at £235 a bottle is not cheap, not a buy. 2022 was not a great Napa Valley vintage, there are plenty of other superior Opus One wines offered at the same or even lower prices.

Vintages such as 2018, 2013 and 2012 are better rated wines from well recognised better vintages. They are all cheaper than 2022. Even exceptionally rated 2019 and 2016 are only marginally higher in price after factoring in storage costs.

With an “Ex-Chateau Price” of £174 and an “Ex-Negociant Price” of £191, its probable 2022 Opus One will trade below £235 in the grey market.

PLEASE NOTE WineBourse has changed its formatting of new release / En Primeur analysis. Previously, WineBourse charts calculated the additional costs new releases would incur compared to older vintages. Now, those same costs are discounted from the best offer prices of those older vintages.

The best market offer (BLUE), the price net of storage without compounding (PINK), and the price adjusted for a 3.5% annual cost of capital plus storage compounded (ORANGE).

Grand Puy Lacoste EP 2024, 13% More Expensive Than 2020

Grand Puy Lacoste 2024 En Primeur pricing at £35.50 is expensive. It is more expensive than all vintages between 2021 and 2011, with the exception of 2016. It is 13% more expensive than 2020, unquestionably a superior vintage and better rated wine.

Even more interesting is that compared to the iconic 2009 vintage, 2024 is only 6% cheaper when storage costs are included. This is far too small of a discount, another example of not enough incentive offered to buy 2024 En Primeur.

**** Please note En Primeur is HIGHLY speculative. This is not buying wine for consumption but making a speculative bet that wine bought now before bottling, will be cheaper than buying the same wine in 5, 10 or 20 years time.

Vieux Chateau Certan 2024 EP, Not Fair Enough

Vieux Chateau Certan 2024 En Primeur offer at £118.00 is fair, but not fair enough. The Chateau’s pricing was considerate, clearly looking closely at where similar vintages are offered in the secondary market. It is priced a couple percentage points cheaper than 2021 and almost flat to 2017.

However, 2014 is offered nearly 12% cheaper. It is a much better vintage than 2024, plus it’s a marginally better rated wine. 2024 pricing is not bad like some recent releases. This is just an instance of a better alternative offered in the secondary market.

Eglise-Clinet EP 2024, The Worst (Extended En Primeur Analysis Included)

Eglise-Clinet 2024 En Primeur is priced at £177.00 and it is the worst. What an exciting conclusion to this campaign, just when it looked like Canon pulled out all the stops to win Worst Priced 2024 En Primeur award, Eglise-Clinet roared in front. This offer has inspired a much deeper analysis. Buckle up, this note will be a long one.

2021 is 44% Cheaper
2020 is 4% Cheaper
2019 is nearly 8% Cheaper
2017 is 39% Cheaper
2016 is 1% Cheaper
2014 is 54% Cheaper!!!!!
2009 is 1% More Expensive
2008 is 58% Cheaper !!!!

Almost all of these wines, on aggregate, are better rated than 2024. Without question, 2020, 2019, 2016, 2014, 2009 and 2008 were superior Bordeaux vintages than 2024. To price this En Primeur more expensive than 2016 is unconscionable (personal note: tried this vintage recently and it was sublime!). To price this En Primeur only 1% lower than 2009 is insanity.

When vintages like 2014 and 2008 are over 50% cheaper than 2024, something is very wrong with this En Primeur offer. Do not get swayed by “new wine maker, much better wine making, blah blah blah” sales speech. Or even worse, do not fall for the “low yield” scarcity justification for these prices. That is just reinforcing what a bad vintage 2024 actually was. The reality is that these wines were rated and re-rated by wine critics. The same critics also rated 2024. While no one will claim a critic is perfect, making an aggregate comparative analysis yields extremely useful conclusions. Folks, this is not rocket science. (See BIO for full analysis).

Evangile 2024 EP, Not Enough Discounts

Evangile’s 2024 En Primeur offer at £95.00 is not discounted enough. While there is a discount versus 2017, it is slightly more expensive than the 2021 vintage. However, 2014 is over 21% cheaper with storage included, and unlike 2024, it is actually a pretty good vintage for Bordeaux.

Most critics are scoring 2014 higher than 2024 and this is even before adjusting for Ratings Inflation (read on WineBourse site: “The Phenomenon of Ratings Inflation”). Even more compelling is 2019. This is an outstanding vintage and Evangile’s wine was rated extremely high. How is it only 2% more expensive than 2024?! 2016, 2010 and 2009 are 38%, 21% and 150% more expensive respectively. The prices for 2024 and 2019 are wrong in opposite directions.

Conseillante 2024 EP, 31% More Expensive Than 2017

Conseillante 2024 En Primeur price of £118.00 is over 31% more expensive than 2017. It is nearly 22% more expensive than 2021.

Not surprising for those reading these 2024 En Primeur reviews, 2017 is a better rated wine. 2021 is more or less the same ratings. Why would anyone pay big double digit premiums for wines of the same (or less quality!), and won’t be physically available for 3 years? In contrast, a really well rated Conseillante from a stunning vintage is 2019. Including storage fees, it’s offered just under 7% over 2024. That wine should definitely have a large double digit premium over 2024 like other great vintages such as 2016, 2010, 2009 and 2005. Forget this En Primeur offer.

Canon 2024 EP, 43% More Expensive Than 2017. Repulsive.

Canon 2024 En Primeur offer at £70.00 is repulsive.

2021 is 37% cheaper.
2019 is 7% cheaper.
2018 is 18% cheaper.
2017 is 43% cheaper !!!!!!
2014 is 37% cheaper.

2024 is worse rated wine than most if not all of these other vintages.

This offer continues a recent trend with this producer (read on our website last year’s review: “Canon 2023, more absurd pricing, do not get fooled again”). At this point their logo should change to a black flag with white skull and crossbones. No one should buy this wine at this price. This epitomises all what is broken with Bordeaux En Primeur and anyone trying to flog this to their customers should be ashamed. It looks like Canon will be the worst 2024 En Primeur offer.

Pichon Comtesse EP 2024, Not Priced Well Enough

Pichon Comtesse 2024 En Primeur offer at £88.50 is not priced well enough. Especially as it is not a particularly well rated wine.

Offered at a premium of over 5% to 2021 and over 11% to 2017, there is no reason to buy 2024 at this price. Pass.

Chateau Margaux 2024, Fairly Valued Offer

Chateau Margaux 2024 En Primeur offer at £270 is a fairly valued offer. As seen with other wines in this campaign, the 2021 vintage is cheaper but only marginally this time.

2024 is priced identical to 2017 when including storage costs. It could be argued that 2017 is slightly better rated, but not really for 2014 which is only a couple percentage points cheaper. Overall, a fair offer price, but it is difficult to opine in this market environment, if being fairly priced will equate to a successful sale.
