An 81-year-old retired farmer has spent 44 years quietly building one of the UK's most complete whisky collections, nearly 5,000 bottles, housed in the converted pig sties on his farm. It started with a single £5.92 bottle in 1982 and now carries a £750,000 guide price.

What stands out isn't just the size of it. It spans blends, single malts and memorabilia across three centuries, built around a love of the whole category rather than chasing the fashionable names.

Most collectors never notice the moment it happens.

You buy a bottle here, one there. You start exploring the different regions, distilleries and cask types, and it becomes a lovely rabbit hole to go down. Then the next thing you know you've got a large collection, it's passed £50,000 in value, and nothing about how it's stored has changed, apart from the cupboard filling up. Under the bed, in the spare room, the attic, maybe even the garage.

It's a problem nobody really talks about. There comes a point where a collection stops being a hobby and becomes an asset, a genuinely prized one. But very few people treat it like that. Home insurance rarely covers spirits at real value, and can exclude them entirely. There's often no record of what's owned, how many bottles there are, or what condition they're in. And the wrong conditions can quietly chip away at value.

Most disputes in storage come down to one question: what condition was the bottle in when it arrived?

We answer that on day one. Any bottle that comes in with an imperfection is photographed, and the image goes straight to you at receipt. When it is withdrawn years later, there is no debate about the condition it came in.

We grade everything across four tiers, from tier 1 (mint) to tier 4 (very superficially damaged), with full HDR condition reporting on top. Clear records from the start save everyone a difficult conversation later.

"Are all my bottles stored together?"

It's one of the first questions new clients ask. Some want their collection kept in one place, others are happy for us to spread it out. Either way, the choice is theirs.

Our own default is to store bottles in batches across different parts of the facility, rather than keeping any one collection in a single spot. The thinking is simple: never let one fault take down everything. If an issue ever arose in one area, no single client would lose their whole collection. And every bottle is fully insured regardless.

A Bowmore 29 Year Old from the Timeless Series, one of 3,000, sent to us directly by a collector working to complete the full run. We photographed it on arrival and sent the images straight back, so they could see the condition it came in for themselves.

Just welcomed our first Karuizawa bottle into storage. A client picked up this Spirit Asama at auction for £670 all-in - quite a jump from its original £63 RRP.

What's fascinating is how "reasonable" this feels in today's Karuizawa market. Recent record-breaking sales make this vatting of 1999 and 2000 vintages seem almost accessible.
