Continuing on the sheep front …. today was the boys turn! It’s been a tiring day. A 200 mile round trip to collect two new rams from Shropshire who will now join our flock - a shearling ram Millenheath Munroe and a ram lamb Holtridge Jasper. They will join our current ram Piddington Beaumont (aka Buffy) and our home grown teaser ram Yarramalong Stanley in the loving stakes. Loving for Stanley begins next Sunday; two weeks later the others will join their chosen ladies. This pedigree breeding malarkey is a fine art. Wine 🍷 is now in hand. Snags for dinner (hands up if you know what they are!) 🖐️

Today it’s the turn of our 2026 ewe lambs who have been moved to fresh pasture (now that there is some!) Unsurprisingly there isn’t a huge amount of the green stuff so these rapidly growing girls will still have a daily ration of sheep nuts, together with a vitamin lick and Himalayan salt block. We don’t put our ewe lambs to the tup, so they have a year of basically eating and lazing around. I think I could do that myself, given half a chance. 😂

It’s pre tupping time. Pre tupping vaccinations, condition checks, new field, vitamin drench and licks, plus a little extra daily dose of hard feed to ensure the girls are in tip top shape. Next step … our teaser tup, Stanley, goes in to tempt the ladies and to ensure that they are ready for the big boys. It helps ensure a tighter lambing window. How fast does the farming year fly by?!

Play not play 🙄 Delilah and Ruby enjoying a little sparring time yesterday afternoon. The tails are wagging but I’m not sure they’ll ever be the best of friends! They rub along together but are very different and their “play” definitely has an edge to it! To start with Ruby is still very bouncy as befits her age, whereas Delilah is older and more set in her ways; she’s not keen on being bounced on. Poor Delilah 😞 I can’t say I blame her, but they do both make me smile. 😊 Love them so much.

I’m feeling a tad sorry for myself. The smile is forced. Yesterday I had a cataract removed and today it’s a bit sore, uncomfortable really. I’m banned from the farm for at least a week, ideally two. There’s just too much dust and grit around and the temptation to do farm work, most of which involves some form of manual work. My consultant was not impressed when I intimidated that I had chores to do on the farm … he threatened me with not just the risk of losing my sight, but losing my eye. He almost refused to operate. Unusually I listened! But I am already bored … and trying not to stress over things that need doing. I’m not good at delegating, 🙄 so I’m making lists. It’s the next best thing. In the farming year there’s never a good time to be out of action. 😞

It’s akin to the Wild West on the farm at the moment. The girls are doing well however, albeit it’s time to add in the vitamin buckets. Some extra nutrients required I think!
