Winsford Hill, Great Bradley, Tarr Steps and return via Watery Lane -5.3 miles.

Parking adjacent to the disused quarry on County Road, our path starts on the opposite side of the road.

Take the wide path downhill, signed Withypool. Follow this path until you reach the entrance to Great Bradley. Walk down the drive, passing railed paddocks until you reach a pedestrian gate on the right with a fingerpost sign.
Follow beside the hedge and the path reaches a gateway. Once through the gate, the path narrows as it descends through woodland and arrives at a path junction.
Ignore wider tracks and take the narrower path for the River Barle. (There is a fallen tree to get around at the moment.) You will arrive at the river and the new Great Bradley Bridge.
Cross the bridge and follow the blue-tipped markers into the woods. Follow this path until you reach the famous clapper bridge at Tarr Steps.
Cross the river and begin to walk back upstream on the tarmac path.
The path follows beside the river and will soon arrive at a gate beside a footbridge. Here we leave the river and turn right uphill once through the gate. This is Watery Lane and will take you through Knaplock Farm. After the farmhouse, turn left up between the barns, keeping an eye out for the faint blue markings on the gate post which marks the continuation of the track.
Follow the track out onto Winsford Hill. The path stays beside the hedge until you reach a sign for County Road, avoiding bog. Turn right up hill in its path, which will join a wider track and further sign. Turn left here on a level track, which will bring you back to the initial path where
You started. Turn right for the short distance back to the road.

(Walk passes through pheasant feeding areas so not great for dogs with a high prey drive until about February)

Simonsbath circular 4.4 miles -

Starting from the bridge, take the footpath through the pedestrian gate which leads upstream, follow the path adjacent course of the leat for the Sawmill. You will reach a footbridge, beside the river briefly at the sluice gates for the Mill. Our path crosses a further bridge and passes out into a field before turning through a gate on the right up to the road.

Cross straight over and follow the bridle path marked Exe Head. There are regular blue markers as you go through a gate and climb a rocky track to then walk along an avenue of trees up the length of Lime Combe and reach another gate. Entering the field, the tip of a blue marker can be seen directly ahead. The path skirts the edge of the field, keeping to the top of the combe. Lime Combe cottages are below as we pass through a pedestrian gate and head for a single tree and a track that curves around the marshy ground to arrive at the sheep pens.

Through this gate, stay by the right hedge and reach a gate onto Dure Down, a fingerpost sign is high on the bank to your right.

(See Prayway head walk to create a 10 mile route from here)

Turn right downhill to exit through two pedestrian gates onto the road at the lay-by; Prayway Head, with views along the river Exe as you descend.

Walk right along the road for about 50 metres, following the two moors way and crossing over through a pedestrian gate onto Great Ashcombe, the path here is quite well trodden and remains about 30 metres from the hedge until you reach a fingerpost sign for Simonsbath at the third gate.

This path is marked with yellow markers and there are a couple of footbridges, however, it does get extremely boggy especially at the beginning. You are aiming for a foot bridge in the hedge straight ahead. From here there is a clear wide path down into Ashcombe Plantation, crossing the stream and climbing some rocky steps to follow the path until you reach the car park in Simonsbath.

Walk through the village to return to the bridge. You can enter the field opposite Pound Cottage to return to the bridge beside the river

Simonsbath Leat path - under a mile

The old leat path for the saw mill has been improved and makes a very pretty short stroll to the sluice gates and back. It can get very muddy but is an enjoyable walk.

The longer Simonsbath circular previously on my page is the 5 mile continuation if looking for a longer route .

Allerford short circular 1.5 miles

Parking in Village Hall Car Park. Cross the road to follow marked footpath past Stokes Farm and then cross the bridge into the woods. Take the uphill path until you reach a fork with a an option to walk along the edge of the woods down a narrower track to Lynch Farm. Take this path and then Keep right once through a wooden barrier. Head up hill through the gate for Selworthy Beacon.

This is a short steep climb and once at the fingerpost, turn right through the pedestrian gate and follow the path down to then take the right fork for a short while beside the stream and back to the footbridge.

Allerford Tea Room & Gardens offers a fabulous opportunity to stop for lunches and treats for humans a doggies alike.

Marsh Bridge, Dulverton Circular 4 ish miles

From Marsh Bridge cross both roads and head up into the woods on an ancient byway towards Court Down. This is a long steady climb but ignore paths to the right until you reach a T-junction where you will see a sign marked as a permitted path for Dulverton. Turn right along this wide stony track, which is level and easy walking and then descends into Dulverton, passing the Old School House to arrive behind the church. There is a narrow tarmac footpath at the end of the church wall, which passes through the Church Yard and brings you out into the town centre.

There are lots of places for refreshment in Dulverton. We chose the Copper Kettle today.

Walk through the town to cross the bridge over the river Barle and take the first right turn into Oldberry Lane. You will walk up between the cottages to see purple-tipped sign. This footpath through Burridge Woods is extremely pretty and undulates beside the river, before passing through Kennel Farm and returning to the road at Marsh Bridge.
