Leek planting!

We had the dream team yesterday- three lovely volunteers who joined us for the day and helped us with the never ending job of planting leeks!

Leek planting is a fun but laborious job. We plant our leeks super deep (and use a drill auger to do so!) so we get super long white stems on them, all the more to use in cooking! Each hole is made, then a leek is dropped in, and it will slowly grow through the summer for us to harvest from early autumn.

Few other notes from us:

Our markets start THIS Saturday! Find us at this Saturday for our first round of early summer produce! Highlights include: broad beans, garlic scapes, radishes, salads, kale, chard, mangetout peas and much more!

Our monthly market Schedule this year is:

First Saturday: Rode Hall Farmers Market
Second Saturday: Northwich Market
Third Saturday: Wilmslow Market (temporary only for June, as our Chester market is closed)
Fourth Saturday: Frodsham Market

If you are unable to make any of our markets, then our first Box delivery is next Thursday! Make sure you have signed up to get yours on our website (www.oakcroft.org.uk)

We are also happy to announce the start of our markets next week! Our first farmers market will be at Rode Hall Farmers market, a new market location for us!

There has been a shift to the weather this last week. Everything had been growing at a crawl due to the abysmal early May. But it's amazing what a few hot days can do! We are just days away from starting to harvest from the farm in earnest after the 'Hungry Gap', always a very exciting time of the year!

Pumpkin planting! ❤️

We love pumpkins and winter squashes- they are an autumnal delight that we look forward to every year! Yet they take a very long time to grow and produce the fruit that we adore. In fact, they are one of the first things that we plant after the last spring frost in order to give them as much time to mature and produce as possible.

However, farming doesn't always go to plan. These were due to be planted last week, but the May weather has been quite unfavourable. With cold and windy nights and even a late frost last week we held out planting them until the weather forecast improved, despite them getting too big for their pots!

We have planted 4 delicious varieties this year, some old favorites and some new test varieties which we have high hopes for! We can't wait for you to try them in autumn!

Do you remember our cover crop from 6 weeks ago? 🌾 🌿

We'll look at it now! In the last 6 weeks, it has put on phenomenal growth due to the warm weather and lengthening days and it is currently at shoulder height! We have been watching it grow with delight, and appreciating all the benefits it has brought to our soils.

What you see in the photos is a cover crop of Rye and Vetch. It was sown in October last year, just as our summer/early autumn crops were finishing and germinated before the cold set in, protecting our soils over winter from errosion. From spring, they grow exponentially and whilst they grow, the rye captures carbon from the atmosphere and locks it into our soils via its root system, whilst the vetch (part of the legume family) fixes nitrogen from the atmosphere for our future crops. But there is far more happening under the surface- a veritable banquet and a thriving ecosystem of fungi, bacteria and invertebrates (and more!) all present only due to the cover crop. Where soil might have stood bare from October, instead it provides habitat, both below as well as above ground and contributes to our immediate biodiversity.

But now, it is time to terminate it. It has done an amazing job building our soil fertility, so we mow it down and allow it to decompose. What will follow will be some of the happiest and healthiest crops one could grow, in soil which is thriving.

700+ tomato plants planted! ❤️ 🍅

Can you taste them already? Because we are so excited for the upcoming tomato season- with 11 varieties just planted (some old favorites and some new ones as well!) we are excited to bring you a range of colours, flavours and shapes!

Tomato planting is one of my favourite jobs on the farm (if you haven't guessed already, anything involving tomatoes is a favourite job of mine). It takes weeks of preparation, clearing out our over wintered tunnel crops, feeding beds with compost, digging holes, planting and stringing them up, but it's all worth it.

Now starts the seemingly endless job of pruning and trellising 700 plants until October!

First courgette planting!

The days are starting to warm up, but the nights are still cold. Many of our summer crops are frost sensitive and one cold and frosty night can devastate an entire early planting! In order to get courgettes to you super early, we plant our first succession under cover in structures that we have designed and made ourselves- 'low tunnels'. These low tunnels are a small mobile polytunnel that are relatively easy to erect or deconstruct. These will provide the much needed protection to our tender courgettes over these cold April nights before they are moved over to our outdoor pepper beds, where they will remain for the rest of the summer. Already, they have earned their keep, protecting our tender courgettes from two frosty nights of -1°C!

Planting is in full swing! 🌱

It's been a busy last couple of weeks on the farm, with loads of bed preparation, broad forking of beds, feeding with compost, terminating cover crop and of course, planting.

Our early brassicas are now in, including our first successions of chard, peas and onions. Much more to come over the next few weeks, with tomatoes, cucumbers and early courgettes being planted in our tunnels as well!

A beautiful and productive time of year!

Potting on our tomatoes! 🍅 ❤️

We have an exciting lineup of heirloom tomatoes this year- a total of eleven varieties! Some are old favorites and seeds we keep year upon year, others are new to us and we hope to add them to our permanent collection.

Started in their cells weeks ago, they have now grown to size where they need potting into larger pots, before we transplant them into our glasshouses and polytunnels, which is only a few short weeks away! At this time of year they grow extraordinarily fast and will take over our propagation house in no time!

Tomato care is one of our favorite jobs on the farm, from sowing to planting, to pruning and harvesting. Handling the plants releases a strong tomato smell that definitely reminds us of summertime. Who doesn't love a good tomato?
