Had a lovely day enjoying the weather and ticking off ‘to do’ list jobs in the vineyard. The flower buds are forming beautifully with less frost damage than I anticipated. Looking very promising. Oh, the keen eyed amongst you may spot a lady bird in one of the photos, I haven’t seen one like that before but it’s definitely welcome. 😀

Well what a day! We were contacted via our website to arrange a vineyard tour for a ‘car rally’. We were amazed when these three stunning cars arrived. The tour was put on hold for a short while so that Viv and I could check out the cars. Not sure that I’m the right size for them though! A great time was had by all. Can you name any of the cars?

One of the joys of spring time. Watching bud burst and the ‘greening’ of the vineyard begin. Time to apply the first spray of sulphur to remind the mildew that it’s not welcome in our vineyard!

Well… Jack Frost paid us a visit and burnt our vines with his icy breath. So frustrating! The first photo shows the difference that raising the fruiting cane just 30 cm higher can make. It’s plain to see the frost damage on the stem but none higher up. Sometimes, a little ingenuity can pay dividends!

We are so pleased for Ruby. It is wonderful news that the wine we produce has helped with the dish that Ruby made to win this accolade. Many congratulations and good luck going forward.

Our Bridlington student Ruby has only gone and won the regional final of
Bravo Ruby. Looking forward to the final stadium in June! Ruby's risotto was a Waldorf inspired risotto utilising delicious Leeds Blue cheese and Malton Vineyard wine 👏👏👏

We were very excited (and a tad nervous) last Wednesday to host an inspection of our vineyard and winery by an inspector from the Environmental Health Service. I am very happy to report that we passed with flying colours. The inspector commented “A very well run business, no issues to raise”. A top grade of 5 feels like a reward for our hard work to get it right for our customers. Many thanks to all who support us. Phil & Viv

Our Rhondo vines were allowed to produce fruit last year. We left it on the vines until it was over ripe to see what flavours the thicker skins would deliver. We used the Rose method to produce the wine but, as you can see, it looks like a rich red. Imagine the surprise when we tasted it the other day, a ruby red rose! The jury is out as to whether we will make it again this year.

Processing apples brings our harvest here at Malton vineyard to a close. A time of mixed emotions; the beginning for next years cider but the end of working outdoors with friends and colleagues to collect fruit. This movie gives an insight of how we extract the juice from our apples. Viv and I have chosen a variety of apples to add both colour and flavour to our Old Grumpy cider. The chemistry of the juice is near perfect with high sugar content and good acidity. I’m already impatient to taste the cider! I have to check myself and remember that, perhaps the most important ingredient in good cider making is patience! As the old adage goes… “Harvest in Autumn, ferment in Winter, mature in Spring, ready to drink in Summer.”

First light and a promising start to this years harvest day. We kept a close watch on weather forecasts this year but thankfully the predicted stormy weather held off. Many thanks to our wonderful team of volunteers who made the day such a success. Lessons learnt from last year were acted on and seemed to help keep the buckets empty and crates flowing to the de-stemmer. Juice quality and volumes are high so we’re looking forward to tasting the wine when it’s ready. Viv reached out to our friends at Food to remember to provide a lovely spread to finish the morning. And as for Pam’s buns, what can I say other than there are none left! Truly, a community effort.
